Chapter 12 - The Secret in the Recipe

Margaret's recipe for rosemary beef contained eleven ingredients.
Pear was number seven.
Rosemary number three.
Sunday appeared nowhere.
Unless it referred to the Sunday dinner sequence Margaret had used with her children.
Claire remembered.
"Mom made seven rotating Sunday meals."
Daniel nodded.
"Roast chicken. Beef. Pasta. Pot roast—"
"Meatloaf," Claire added.
"You hated meatloaf."
"Everybody hated her meatloaf."
Elise studied the cookbook.
"What was number eleven?"
"There wasn't eleven."
Then Daniel understood.
His childhood home had been 11 Marigold Lane.
Home.
The clues pointed there.
The Mercer family house had been sold after Arthur died.
Daniel bought it back six years later but never lived there.
He couldn't explain why.
Now he could.
Some part of him had refused to let it go.
They entered the empty house just after sunrise.
Dust covered the floors.
Claire stopped in the foyer.
For twenty-four years she had avoided this place even in memory.
Daniel watched her.
"Too much?"
She shook her head.
"Exactly enough."
They walked into the kitchen.
Claire touched the counter where Margaret had taught her to cook.
Daniel found the scratch he had made with a toy truck at age eight.
Claire laughed.
"Dad blamed me for that."
"You told him I did it."
"He didn't believe me."
"Because you lied constantly."
"I was protecting you."
"That's what everybody says in this family."
Even Claire laughed.
Elise watched them rediscover childhood one corner at a time.
Then she noticed a small ceramic tile painted with a pear.
"Was this always here?"
Claire nodded.
"Mom made it."
Elise pressed it.
Nothing.
Daniel turned it.
A click.
The tile opened like a tiny door.
Behind it sat a brass key and a folded bank document.
The Marigold Trust.
Created by Margaret Mercer.
The trust owned original shares in the family company.
Not many at first.
But after decades of corporate expansion, those shares were now worth tens of millions.
More important was the trust agreement.
If fraud involving the Mercer family trust was proven, control of certain voting shares automatically transferred to Margaret's surviving descendants.
Claire.
Daniel.
And, through Claire, Elise.
Victor had spent decades trying to destroy the evidence because the moment his theft was proven, he wouldn't merely face criminal exposure.
He would lose control of the Mercer empire.
Rebecca called.
Federal investigators had found something on Hawthorne's servers.
Payments to Michael's son's kidnappers.
Payments to the contractors connected to the elevator.
And a transfer made the day before the cellar fire.
Victor could now be linked to recent crimes.
"Where is he?" Daniel asked.
"We don't know."
Daniel looked at Claire.
Victor was cornered.
Cornered men were dangerous.
That afternoon, investigators obtained a warrant.
Victor's Manhattan apartment was empty.
Passport gone.
Cash missing.
A private plane connected to one of his companies had filed a flight plan for Canada.
Authorities moved to stop it.
But Victor wasn't aboard.
It was a distraction.
At 6:12 p.m., Elise returned briefly to Aurelia.
Chef Marcus hugged her.
"You've turned my restaurant into a news story."
"Sorry."
"You made rosemary beef famous. Reservations are booked for six weeks."
Elise laughed.
Then she noticed an envelope waiting at her station.
No name.
Inside was a photograph of Claire entering the old Mercer house that morning.
Victor was still watching.
On the back:
The recipe brought you to him. Now it brings him to me.
Elise called Daniel.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
She called Claire.
"Where's Daniel?"
"Meeting investigators."
"Are you sure?"
Claire hesitated.
"He left twenty minutes ago."
"With who?"
"I thought with Rebecca."
Rebecca was standing beside Elise.
Both women's faces changed.
Daniel had received a message too.
One claiming Elise had been taken.
Victor knew exactly which weakness to exploit.
Daniel had spent twenty-four years believing he failed to protect Claire.
Now he had a niece.
Victor only needed Daniel to believe history was repeating itself.
Elise dialed him again.
This time someone answered.
Not Daniel.
Victor.
"Hello, Elise."
Her blood went cold.
"Where is he?"
"Coming to save you."
"I'm not with you."
"I know."
"You lied to him."
"Of course."
"What do you want?"
Victor laughed softly.
"The same thing I've wanted since your grandmother decided she was smarter than me."
"The trust?"
"Control."
"You've already lost."
"No."
Victor's voice hardened.
"Your uncle is bringing me the original ledger."
Elise looked at Rebecca.
"He doesn't have it."
A pause.
Then Victor said:
"Daniel doesn't know that."
The call ended.
Elise stared at the phone.
Victor had finally found the perfect weapon.
Not money.
Not evidence.
Family.
May you like
And Daniel was walking directly into the trap because he believed Elise's life depended on it.
