Chapter 8 - The Locked Room

They drove to Vermont the next morning.
Thomas Reed lived in a weathered farmhouse surrounded by pine trees and silence.
He was eighty-one now, thin but sharp-eyed.
When Claire stepped onto the porch, Reed stared at her for nearly ten seconds.
"I knew it."
Claire frowned.
"Knew what?"
"That you weren't dead."
"Why didn't you find me?"
"I tried."
He looked toward Daniel.
"Your father stopped me."
Inside, Reed opened a metal box.
Photographs filled several envelopes.
One showed Victor speaking with a state senator outside the original Mercer Hotel.
Another showed an exchange of envelopes.
Another showed Arthur.
Daniel stopped.
His father stood beside Victor.
"You said Victor forged his involvement."
"In the financial records," Reed replied. "Not everything else."
Claire closed her eyes.
Reed explained.
Arthur had participated in early bribes intended to secure building permits.
But Margaret discovered that Victor had expanded the scheme massively.
She threatened to expose him.
Then she died.
Arthur became terrified.
After Claire discovered the financial records, Arthur realized Victor might come after her too.
"Your father helped Claire disappear," Reed said.
Daniel stared.
Claire looked equally stunned.
"No. Dad believed I stole the money."
"That's what he wanted Victor to believe."
Claire's eyes filled.
Reed continued.
"Arthur came to me three days after your car was found. He told me privately that he believed you were alive. He asked me to stop looking publicly."
"Why?"
"To protect Daniel."
Daniel leaned forward.
"From Victor?"
Reed nodded.
Arthur had quietly begun gathering evidence.
But he could never act openly.
Victor held proof of Arthur's involvement in the early bribery.
If Arthur went to police, the Mercer company could collapse, taking thousands of employees with it.
So Arthur waited.
And tried to protect Daniel until he could find enough evidence to separate Victor's crimes from his own.
He died before succeeding.
Daniel stood at the window.
"So everybody was protecting me."
Claire whispered, "Dad knew."
"For how long?"
"Apparently the whole time."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"He let me bury my sister."
Reed shook his head.
"He let Victor believe you had."
"That's not better."
"No."
The old detective's honesty silenced him.
Elise examined the photographs.
One image showed Margaret entering a basement door.
"What is this?"
Reed looked.
"Old Mercer Hotel."
"Locker seventeen?"
"No."
He pointed.
"That's the wine cellar."
Daniel remembered the building plans.
"The cellar was sealed during construction of Mercer Tower."
"Why?"
"Structural damage."
Reed shook his head.
"That's what the public report said."
"What really happened?"
"A fire."
Claire looked up.
"When?"
"Two weeks before Margaret died."
Daniel's pulse quickened.
The fire had never appeared in company histories.
Reed handed him a small brass key.
"Your father gave me this."
Daniel took it.
"What does it open?"
"He said you'd know when the time came."
They returned to Manhattan that night.
The original hotel's cellar now sat beneath two levels of renovated office storage.
Daniel found the sealed door behind a maintenance wall.
The brass key fit.
Inside, dust hung in stale air.
Rows of empty wine racks lined the walls.
Elise used her phone flashlight.
"Grandma came here?"
Claire nodded.
"Apparently."
At the far end stood an old desk.
Inside were receipts, newspapers, and photographs.
Nothing immediately important.
Then Elise saw scratches beneath the desk.
She crawled down.
"There's something here."
A wooden panel slid aside.
Behind it sat a metal cassette recorder.
Daniel laughed softly.
"Mom hated new technology."
Claire pressed play.
Static.
Then Margaret Mercer's voice filled the cellar.
Daniel's knees nearly gave way.
"Arthur, if you're hearing this, I was right about Victor."
Claire covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
Margaret described Hawthorne.
Bribes.
Theft.
Threats.
Then:
"Victor knows I've been collecting evidence. If anything happens to me, protect Claire and Daniel."
Daniel closed his eyes.
His mother's voice after twenty-seven years.
Then another sentence.
One that changed everything again.
"There is someone else helping Victor."
Elise looked at Daniel.
The tape crackled.
"A person inside the company. Someone Arthur trusts."
Margaret began saying a name.
The tape distorted.
They couldn't hear it.
Daniel replayed the section.
Again.
Nothing.
Then footsteps sounded outside the cellar.
Everyone stopped.
The door slammed.
Locked from outside.
Claire rushed toward it.
"Hello?"
No response.
Daniel called security.
No signal belowground.
Elise searched the room.
"There has to be another exit."
They heard something else.
A faint hiss.
Daniel looked toward an old ventilation pipe.
Smoke began drifting beneath the door.
Claire's eyes widened.
"No."
Someone had set a fire outside.
Daniel grabbed the recorder.
"Find another way out."
They searched desperately.
The smoke thickened.
Elise coughed.
Then she noticed one old wine rack had cleaner dust than the others.
She pulled.
It moved.
Behind it was a narrow service passage.
"Here!"
They crawled through.
By the time firefighters arrived, the storage level was burning.
The cellar survived.
Barely.
Outside, Daniel watched smoke roll from Mercer Tower.
Rebecca approached.
"Security says the fire started deliberately."
"Camera footage?"
"Deleted."
"By who?"
She hesitated.
"Administrative credentials."
"Victor?"
"No."
Daniel turned.
"The login belonged to someone else."
"Who?"
Rebecca's face was pale.
"Mine."
Daniel stared at her.
For the first time since Claire returned, the danger wasn't coming from outside his circle.
May you like
It was already standing inside it.
