Chapter 13 - The Safe in the Cellar

Daniel drove toward the abandoned Mercer Motel with a fake ledger on the passenger seat.

He wasn't as reckless as Victor hoped.

Before leaving, Daniel had triggered a silent location tracker on his watch.

He knew investigators would follow.

What he didn't know was whether they would arrive before Victor realized the ledger was fake.

The motel looked deserted.

Room seven stood open.

Daniel entered.

"Victor?"

"Put the case down."

Victor stepped from behind the office door holding a gun.

Daniel's stomach tightened.

For decades, Victor had hidden behind lawyers, money, and other people.

Now fear had stripped away the polish.

"You told me you had Elise."

"I told you what you needed to hear."

Daniel placed the case down.

"She's safe?"

"For now."

"Then we're done."

Victor smiled.

"Open it."

Daniel did.

The fake ledger looked nearly identical.

Victor flipped several pages.

His face changed.

"This isn't it."

Daniel said nothing.

Victor lifted the gun.

"Where is the original?"

"Somewhere you'll never reach."

"You're becoming sentimental."

"So I've been told."

"Claire did that."

"My sister made me smarter."

"Your sister ruined everything."

Daniel's anger surged.

"She was twenty-eight years old."

"She was naive."

"You threatened her."

"She threatened all of us."

"No. She threatened you."

Victor's hand tightened around the gun.

"You think this family fortune was built honestly?"

"No."

That answer surprised him.

Daniel continued.

"I know Dad made mistakes."

"Mistakes?"

"Crimes."

Victor smiled.

"Finally."

"But he regretted them."

"Regret is what weak men call fear after they've profited."

Daniel studied him.

"Is that what you told yourself after my mother died?"

Victor's expression changed.

Daniel pushed.

"Did you kill her?"

"No."

"Thomas Harper?"

"No."

"Then why were you photographed near his car?"

Victor stared.

For the first time, true shock.

Daniel knew he hadn't seen the photograph.

"Thomas had a camera everywhere," Victor said.

"What did you do to his car?"

"Nothing."

"You're lying."

"I didn't need to."

Daniel paused.

"What does that mean?"

Victor lowered the gun slightly.

"Thomas wasn't supposed to die."

Daniel listened.

Victor had confronted Thomas that afternoon.

He demanded the photographs.

Thomas refused.

They fought.

Victor admitted threatening him.

But insisted he never touched the brakes.

"Then who did?"

Victor looked toward the dark window.

"Helen."

Rebecca's mother.

Daniel shook his head.

"Another lie."

"Helen was terrified. Thomas had photographed her delivering cash."

"She was helping Margaret."

"Eventually."

Victor laughed.

"You people keep turning dead sinners into saints."

According to Victor, Helen had participated in the bribery scheme before switching sides.

She tampered with Thomas's car to retrieve evidence, but the damage she caused led to the crash.

Afterward guilt destroyed her.

Daniel couldn't know whether this was true.

Victor wanted confusion.

Always.

"Why tell me?"

"Because truth is never as clean as Claire wants it to be."

"She's not asking for clean."

Daniel stepped closer.

"She's asking for an end."

Victor raised the gun.

"You sound like Margaret."

"Good."

Victor's face twisted.

"She thought she could take everything from me."

"She tried to stop you stealing."

"I built Mercer!"

"You stole Mercer."

Victor shouted, "I MADE YOUR FATHER!"

Outside, police vehicles approached without sirens.

Victor heard nothing.

Daniel continued keeping him talking.

"What happened to Mom?"

Victor's breathing slowed.

"She had a stroke."

"That's all?"

"Yes."

"Did you cause it?"

"No."

Daniel watched his eyes.

Victor looked almost offended.

"Your mother collapsed after confronting me. We argued. She threatened police. Her blood pressure was already dangerous."

"And you left her?"

Victor said nothing.

Daniel understood.

Margaret had suffered a medical emergency during their confrontation.

Victor could have called for help.

He hadn't.

"You watched her die."

"I protected the family."

"You watched her die."

"She had already made her decision."

Daniel lunged.

Victor fired.

The bullet struck the wall.

Police stormed the motel.

Victor grabbed Daniel and pressed the weapon against his neck.

"Back!"

Agents stopped.

Daniel could feel Victor shaking.

Not powerful anymore.

Terrified.

"Car!" Victor shouted. "Now!"

Then Claire's voice came from outside.

"Victor!"

Everyone froze.

She stood behind police lines.

Elise beside her.

Daniel's eyes widened.

"Claire, leave!"

She ignored him.

Victor stared at the sister he had tried to erase.

"You should've stayed gone."

Claire stepped forward.

"You've been saying that for twenty-four years."

"Stop!"

"You were right about one thing."

"What?"

"I was afraid."

Claire's voice remained steady.

"Every day."

Victor tightened his hold on Daniel.

Claire continued.

"But fear ends when the thing you're afraid of has already taken everything it can."

Victor stared.

"You took my name."

Another step.

"My brother."

Another.

"My daughter's father."

Elise's eyes filled.

"My home."

Claire stopped.

"You don't have anything left to threaten me with."

Victor's attention shifted toward her.

Only for a second.

Daniel drove his elbow backward.

The gun fell.

Agents tackled Victor.

Claire ran to Daniel.

For several seconds the motel was chaos.

Handcuffs.

Commands.

Sirens.

Then Victor Mercer lay on the ground, hands restrained behind him.

He looked up at Claire.

"You think this ends because I'm arrested?"

Claire crouched beside him.

"No."

Victor smiled.

She continued.

"It ends because I'm done letting you decide how my story is told."

Officers pulled him away.

Daniel hugged Claire.

Elise joined them.

Three survivors from two generations standing in the ruined place where their family's lies had begun.

But as investigators searched Victor's belongings, they found one key.

A safe-deposit key.

Stamped with the name of a Swiss bank.

Rebecca looked at it.

"Victor may still have money outside Hawthorne."

Daniel shook his head.

"Let investigators handle it."

Claire studied her brother.

"You don't want to know?"

"I want dinner."

Elise laughed.

"After all this?"

"Especially after all this."

Daniel looked at his niece.

"Think you can make rosemary beef?"

She smiled.

"Only if you're willing to admit the onions aren't disgusting."

Daniel considered.

"No promises."

For the first time, they walked away from one of Victor's secrets without chasing it.

Because some victories began not by knowing everything—

May you like

but by deciding what no longer deserved to control your life.
