Chapter 11 - Audrey at the Gate

Lucas did not approach her.

Sophia remained inside the car with Leo.

“What do you want?”

Audrey looked different.

No expensive coat.

No perfect makeup.

No arrogant expression.

She looked tired.

“I wanted to apologize.”

“You already sent a letter.”

“I know.”

“Then you've apologized.”

Audrey swallowed.

“I need Sophia to hear me.”

“No.”

“Lucas—”

“No.”

Audrey looked toward the car.

Sophia was watching.

Lucas stepped slightly to block Audrey's view.

“You don't get to decide what Sophia needs.”

Audrey's eyes filled.

“I was wrong.”

Lucas said nothing.

“I let Mom convince me—”

“Stop.”

Audrey froze.

“You made choices.”

“I know.”

“Then own yours.”

She lowered her eyes.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then the car door opened.

Lucas turned.

Sophia stepped out.

“Sophia—”

“It's okay.”

Lucas hesitated.

Sophia handed Leo to him.

Then she approached Audrey, stopping several feet away.

Audrey began crying.

“I'm sorry.”

Sophia's expression remained calm.

“For what?”

Audrey seemed surprised.

“All of it.”

“No.”

Sophia shook her head.

“Tell me what you're sorry for.”

Audrey struggled.

“For taking your phone.”

Sophia waited.

“For helping Mom stop you from leaving.”

Another pause.

“For telling Lucas you were unstable.”

Sophia's eyes glistened.

“And?”

Audrey looked toward Leo.

“For not helping him when you asked me.”

Sophia closed her eyes briefly.

When she opened them, she looked different.

Not healed.

Not untouched.

But strong.

“I believe you're sorry.”

Hope flashed across Audrey's face.

Then Sophia continued.

“That doesn't mean you come back into our lives.”

Audrey's hope disappeared.

“I understand.”

“Maybe someday things will be different.”

Audrey nodded.

“But I decide that. Not you.”

“I understand.”

Sophia stepped backward.

Audrey wiped her face.

Then she looked at Lucas.

He said nothing.

There was nothing left to say.

Audrey walked away.

Sophia watched until her car disappeared.

Lucas approached.

“You okay?”

“No.”

He nodded.

“Want to go inside?”

“Yes.”

They entered their home.

Sophia locked the door.

This time, the sound did not represent imprisonment.

It represented choice.

That night, she slept without checking the front door.

But Eleanor would not accept boundaries as easily as Audrey.

Three days later, a new letter arrived.

This one contained no apology.

Only a demand.

And one sentence made Lucas realize his mother still believed the story could somehow end on her terms.

If Sophia tells the truth, she'll admit she caused this family to fall apart.

Lucas handed the letter to Sophia.

She read it once.

Then tore it in half.

“I'm done.”

Lucas looked at her.

“With her?”

May you like

“With letting her tell me who I am.”

And that decision would become more important than either of them realized when Eleanor finally had to answer publicly for what happened inside the house.
