Chapter 15 - Sophia's New Beginning

Sophia wanted to return to school.

She had postponed graduate studies when Lucas's military responsibilities increased and then again during pregnancy.

Now she wanted them back.

“I don't know if I'm ready,” she admitted.

Lucas smiled.

“You've said that before.”

“When?”

“The day we went back to the house.”

“And?”

“You walked inside anyway.”

Sophia rolled her eyes.

“That's annoyingly inspirational.”

“I practiced.”

She applied.

Weeks later, she was accepted.

The first morning she left for class, she stood at the door for nearly five minutes.

Lucas held Leo.

“You're going to be late.”

“I know.”

“He'll be fine.”

“I know.”

“I'll be fine.”

“That part worries me more.”

Lucas pretended to be offended.

Sophia kissed Leo.

Then Lucas.

Then she walked outside.

Halfway to the car, she turned.

Lucas waved.

“Go.”

She laughed and continued.

He watched her drive away.

Independence looked ordinary from the outside.

A woman driving to class.

But Lucas knew what it meant.

Months earlier, Sophia had needed permission to leave her own house.

Now nobody decided where she went except Sophia.

Lucas spent that morning with Leo.

It was disastrous.

There was spilled formula.

A diaper incident Lucas would never describe publicly.

And one missing sock that was eventually discovered inside Lucas's sleeve.

When Sophia returned, father and son were asleep on the couch.

She took a picture.

Lucas woke.

“Delete that.”

“Never.”

“You're cruel.”

“I learned from a professional.”

The joke hung in the air for a second.

Sophia's smile faded.

Lucas noticed.

“Too soon?”

“Maybe.”

“Sorry.”

She sat beside him.

“No. It's okay.”

Healing did not mean pretending nothing happened.

It meant learning which memories still hurt and which had lost their power.

Over time, more lost their power.

Sophia completed her first semester.

Leo learned to crawl.

Lucas received a promotion that allowed him to remain based closer to home.

The house changed.

New paint.

New furniture.

New photographs.

The nursery camera was replaced.

Sophia chose the new system herself.

The old one remained stored as evidence until it was no longer required.

When it was finally returned, Lucas asked what she wanted to do with it.

“Throw it away.”

He did.

No ceremony.

No speech.

Just a broken chapter dropped into a trash bin.

One afternoon, Audrey sent another letter.

Sophia asked Lucas if he wanted to read it.

He shook his head.

“You?”

“No.”

They returned it unopened through appropriate channels.

That surprised Lucas.

Months earlier, curiosity would have consumed him.

Now it didn't.

The present had become more interesting than the past.

Then, shortly before Leo's first birthday, Michael called.

“There is one final financial matter.”

Lucas sighed.

“What now?”

“Good news.”

“That exists?”

“Occasionally.”

Recovered funds and final estate-related arrangements meant the financial damage could be resolved without threatening Lucas and Sophia's future.

The house was secure.

Their savings were secure.

The nightmare Eleanor and Audrey had created would not follow Leo into adulthood.

Lucas thanked him.

Before hanging up, Michael added:

“One more thing.”

Lucas laughed.

“You attorneys should stop saying that.”

“You'll like this one.”

“What?”

“It's finished.”

Lucas became silent.

“All of it?”

“The major matters we've been handling, yes.”

Lucas looked toward Sophia.

She was sitting on the floor helping Leo stack blocks.

One block fell.

Leo laughed.

Sophia laughed with him.

Lucas felt something release inside his chest.

Not triumph.

Peace.

He ended the call.

Sophia looked up.

“What?”

Lucas smiled.

“We're done.”

She understood immediately.

Her eyes filled.

Then Leo knocked over the remaining blocks and squealed.

Sophia wiped her eyes.

“Apparently he's celebrating.”

Lucas sat beside them.

“Good.”

Leo's first birthday was three weeks away.

Sophia had planned something small.

Lucas agreed.

Then Sophia's father got involved.

The definition of “small” changed rapidly.

By the time invitations went out, half the people who had helped them through the worst year of their lives were coming.

And Lucas realized Leo's birthday would mark something else.

May you like

Exactly one year since Sophia had become a mother.

And almost one year since she had nearly lost everything.
