Chapter 5 - The Signature

By sunrise, the story Eleanor had constructed was beginning to collapse.

The forged document changed everything.

It was no longer possible to dismiss the situation as a family argument.

Questions now involved financial records, property, coercion, and documents Sophia insisted she had never signed.

Lucas stayed at the hospital.

He refused to leave Sophia and Leo.

His attorney handled the property.

Investigators handled the evidence.

Doctors handled Leo.

For once, Lucas accepted that protecting his family did not mean personally controlling every detail.

It meant making sure the right people could do their jobs.

At 6:13 a.m., Leo's fever finally dropped below the level that had terrified everyone.

Sophia slept for nearly an hour.

Lucas sat beside her bed holding his son.

Leo's fingers were wrapped around one of his.

Lucas stared at them.

“You don't know me yet,” he whispered.

Leo shifted.

“But I'm here.”

Lucas's phone vibrated.

Michael.

Lucas stepped into the hallway.

“What happened?”

“They're being removed from the property.”

“Both?”

“Yes.”

Lucas leaned against the wall.

“And the investigation?”

“Continuing.”

“Were they arrested?”

Michael paused.

“Authorities have taken action based on what they've documented. I'm not going to get ahead of the process.”

Lucas nodded.

That was Michael.

Precise even at sunrise.

“What about the estate?”

“Your mother's assumptions were wrong. Her permission to reside there did not give her ownership. We're documenting everything and taking the necessary legal steps.”

Lucas looked through the window at Sophia.

“I want her protected.”

“She will be.”

“And Audrey?”

“Same situation regarding access to the property.”

Lucas lowered his voice.

“I don't care about revenge.”

“I know.”

“I want them away from Sophia and Leo.”

“That's what we're working toward.”

When Lucas returned, Sophia was awake.

“Are they gone?”

“Soon.”

She stared at him.

“Your mother is going to hate me forever.”

Lucas sat beside her.

“This isn't because of you.”

“She'll say it is.”

“She can say whatever she wants.”

Sophia looked toward Leo.

“I kept thinking you would come home and blame me.”

“For what?”

“For destroying your family.”

Lucas's expression softened.

“Sophia.”

She looked at him.

“You didn't destroy anything.”

He placed Leo carefully in her arms.

“The people who did this made their own choices.”

Sophia began crying.

Lucas kissed her forehead.

Outside the hospital room, footsteps approached.

Michael appeared again.

This time, he wasn't alone.

Sophia's father stood behind him.

She gasped.

“Dad?”

The older man crossed the room.

Sophia broke down the moment he hugged her.

Lucas stepped away, giving them space.

Her father had received only fragments of the truth through desperate emails Sophia managed to send before losing access to her phone.

Those emails had helped trigger concern long before Lucas returned.

Now, for the first time, Sophia told him everything.

Lucas listened from across the room.

And then Sophia revealed something nobody had heard before.

“There was another document.”

Michael looked up.

“What document?”

Sophia wiped her face.

“I don't know exactly.”

“When did you see it?”

“The night they took my phone.”

Lucas leaned forward.

“What did it say?”

Sophia looked at him.

“Your name was on it.”

“What about my name?”

She swallowed.

“I only saw the first page.”

Michael waited.

Sophia's next words changed the direction of the investigation again.

“It said something about you being unable to manage your own affairs while deployed.”

Lucas stared at her.

Michael slowly closed his portfolio.

If Sophia remembered correctly, Eleanor had not merely been trying to control a house.

May you like

She had been trying to manufacture authority over her own son.

And somewhere inside that house might be the document that proved exactly how far she had planned to go.
