Chapter 10 - Vanessa Came to My Door

Six months later, Vanessa appeared outside my house.

She looked different.

No red silk.

No executive heels.

Jeans, a plain sweater, and tired eyes.

“I know I shouldn't be here.”

“You shouldn't.”

“I need five minutes.”

I nearly closed the door.

Then she held out an envelope.

“My mother's journal.”

I stopped.

“She wrote about your mother.”

That changed everything.

We sat on the porch.

Vanessa didn't enter my home.

That boundary mattered.

Susan Bennett's journal confirmed Mom's recording.

But it contained something else.

After Daniel's first fraud scheme, my mother had wanted to expose him publicly.

Dad refused.

Not because he wanted to protect Daniel.

Because exposing the fraud immediately would have destroyed a pension restructuring involving thousands of employees.

Dad chose a quiet repayment agreement while regulators reviewed the matter.

Daniel used that secrecy to reinvent himself as the victim.

Vanessa's mother believed him.

Eventually Vanessa did too.

“I hated your family,” Vanessa said.

“And that made sleeping with my husband okay?”

“No.”

“Helping frame me?”

“No.”

“Standing over me at that party?”

Her eyes filled.

“No.”

I waited.

She didn't ask forgiveness.

That mattered.

“I wanted you to know I understand what I did.”

“Good.”

“I'll spend a long time wishing I hadn't.”

“You should.”

She nodded.

Then she stood.

Before leaving, she said, “Your mother sounded extraordinary.”

“She was.”

Vanessa walked away.

I never became her friend.

Some stories don't need that ending.

May you like

Sometimes accountability is enough.
