Chapter 4 - Vanessa Was Never Just the Mistress

Vanessa was twenty-nine.
My mother had been dead eleven years.
The timeline made no sense.
Until Margaret investigated Vanessa's family.
Her full legal name wasn't Vanessa Cole.
It was Vanessa Cole Bennett.
Her mother had worked at Hale Meridian eighteen years earlier.
Accounting department.
Her name was Susan Bennett.
Dad remembered her.
Barely.
Daniel remembered her very well.
Susan had been the employee who discovered Daniel's first theft.
Suddenly, Vanessa wasn't simply Ethan's assistant.
She was connected to the Hale family before she had ever met my husband.
The police located Vanessa shortly after midnight.
She had returned to her apartment.
She agreed to questioning.
And by morning, she wanted an attorney.
But before she stopped talking, she said something strange.
“Claire thinks I'm sleeping with Ethan because I love him?”
The detective asked why else she would.
Vanessa laughed.
“Ethan was a door.”
A door to what?
Hale Meridian.
Daniel had recruited Vanessa years earlier.
Not because she was his lover.
Not because she wanted money.
Because she believed Robert Hale had destroyed her mother's career after Susan exposed the original fraud.
Daniel had rewritten that history too.
He convinced Susan—and eventually Vanessa—that Dad had covered up his own crimes and blamed Daniel.
A family feud had become generational.
And Ethan had walked straight into it.
But none of that excused what Vanessa had done.
She had helped falsify documents.
She had helped steal money.
She had participated in a plan to blame me.
And she had knowingly become involved with my husband.
By noon, Ethan had been released pending further investigation into the financial allegations, although the assault case remained active.
He called me seventeen times.
I answered the eighteenth.
“Claire.”
His voice sounded exhausted.
“You need to fix this.”
There it was.
Not Are you okay?
Not How is the baby?
Fix this.
“I can't.”
“Yes, you can. Tell them you don't want charges.”
“You hurt me.”
“I lost control.”
“In front of a hundred people.”
“I was under pressure.”
“You were framing me for fraud.”
Silence.
Then he said, “Daniel told me you were stealing from your father.”
I almost laughed.
“So you decided to steal too?”
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
He did.
Not because he loved me.
Because he was scared.
Daniel approached Ethan two years earlier.
He told Ethan who I really was.
He promised him a direct path into Hale Meridian's executive leadership.
First Vice President.
Then Chief Strategy Officer.
Eventually CEO.
All Ethan had to do was help expose “corruption” inside the Hale family.
Except the evidence Daniel provided was fabricated.
By the time Ethan realized that, he had already signed documents connecting himself to illegal transfers.
Daniel owned him.
Then Vanessa became Daniel's handler.
Then Ethan and Vanessa began sleeping together.
“You expect me to feel sorry for you?” I asked.
“No.”
For once, he sounded sincere.
“I expect you to understand that Daniel isn't finished.”
“What does that mean?”
“He has something.”
“What?”
“Your mother's second letter.”
My heart stopped.
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
“Claire, listen to me. Daniel believes that letter can destroy your father and collapse Hale Meridian's board.”
“Why?”
“Because your mother discovered something bigger than theft.”
I gripped the phone.
“What?”
Ethan lowered his voice.
“Daniel says your father doesn't actually control Hale Meridian.”
“That makes no sense.”
“He owns the majority voting position.”
“Exactly.”
“No.”
Ethan paused.
“You do.”
I said nothing.
“Your mother transferred a block of shares into a trust before she died.”
“How much?”
“Enough that when combined with your existing inheritance, you control fifty-two percent.”
My knees weakened.
“That isn't possible.”
“It is.”
“Why wouldn't I know?”
“Because the trust activates under a specific condition.”
“What condition?”
“I don't know.”
I closed my eyes.
“Where's Daniel?”
“I don't know that either.”
“Then you're useless.”
“Claire.”
I almost hung up.
Then he said something that stopped me.
“Daniel is coming for you.”
My hand tightened around the phone.
“He told me the entire plan depended on one thing.”
“What?”
“You never finding out what your mother left you.”
The line went dead.
Three seconds later, my father's phone rang.
It was corporate security.
Someone had entered Hale Meridian headquarters using Daniel's credentials.
The building was supposed to be locked down.
“What floor?” Dad asked.
He listened.
Then his face went pale.
“The executive archive.”
I knew immediately what Daniel wanted.
The original Hale family trust documents.
And if Ethan was right, somewhere inside that archive was proof that the person everyone had treated like a powerless wife wasn't powerless at all.

I was the controlling shareholder.
