Chapter 11 - The Vote That Changed Hale Meridian

A year after the gala, my father announced his retirement.

The board expected me to replace him.

Again, I refused.

Then I proposed something nobody expected.

No Hale would automatically become CEO again.

The position would be earned.

Independent directors would control succession.

Family ownership would no longer equal executive authority.

Dad stared at the proposal for almost a minute.

Then he smiled.

“You're dismantling my dynasty.”

“I'm protecting your company.”

“From my family?”

“Especially from our family.”

He laughed.

Then voted yes.

The proposal passed.

Employees applauded when the announcement became public.

For decades, Hale Meridian had been Robert Hale's company.

Now it would belong, culturally if not literally, to everyone who helped build it.

After the meeting, Dad and I stood alone in the boardroom.

“You're better at this than I was.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You built it.”

“And you knew when not to take it.”

He looked toward the city.

“Your mother would be proud.”

I believed him.

That was enough.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Ethan.

Elizabeth took three steps today. Supervisor got video. Sending it through the approved app.

I smiled.

Our daughter was walking.

May you like

Life was moving too.
