Chapter 1 - The Empty Desk

Blood on concrete.

A shattered watch.

And an iron door that should never have been locked.

Damian Russo had spent most of his adult life learning how to recognize danger before it arrived. He could hear deception in the smallest hesitation. He could walk into a room filled with enemies and know which man would reach for a weapon first. He could look across a negotiation table and tell exactly how much money—or fear—it would take to change someone's loyalty.

But on that Tuesday morning in late October, the first warning was nothing more than an empty chair.

At exactly eight o'clock, Damian stepped from the private elevator onto the forty-second floor of Russo Holdings' Tribeca headquarters.

The building presented itself to Manhattan as the home of an enormously successful real-estate and international logistics company.

Only a handful of people understood what existed underneath that polished exterior.

Damian crossed the marble reception area with Bruno walking several steps behind him.

Then he stopped.

Khloe Hayes's desk was empty.

That alone was enough to make something inside him tighten.

Her computer was dark.

Her leather handbag wasn't hanging from the hook beside the desk.

More importantly, there was no coffee waiting outside Damian's office.

Macallan 18 was his drink after dark.

But every morning, Khloe placed black coffee on the same coaster at precisely 7:55.

She had done it for three years.

Damian looked toward a junior associate.

"Where is Miss Hayes?"

The young man immediately straightened.

"I don't know, Mr. Russo. She hasn't swiped in."

"What time did you call her?"

"About fifteen minutes ago."

"And?"

"Voicemail."

Damian removed his phone.

Khloe's private number was one of very few personal contacts stored without a surname.

He called.

One ring.

Two.

Then voicemail.

Damian lowered the phone.

Khloe was never late.

She had never disappeared without telling him.

Three years earlier, she had entered his world because of a debt that wasn't hers.

Her father had gambled until the numbers became impossible to ignore. Khloe, then a senior risk analyst at Deloitte, had offered Damian something more useful than money.

Her expertise.

The original arrangement was temporary.

She would untangle a complicated network of legitimate companies, restructure financial liabilities, and work until the debt was cleared.

It had taken less than a year.

But Khloe stayed.

Eventually she became his executive secretary.

Then his adviser.

Then the one person capable of walking into his office without knocking.

The relationship had become something neither of them named.

Damian noticed when she changed perfume.

He noticed when she skipped lunch.

He noticed when she smiled at everyone except him because she was angry with him.

On her twenty-seventh birthday, he had given her a vintage Patek Philippe.

"Corporate bonus," he had said.

Khloe had stared at the watch.

"This costs more than my first apartment."

"Then don't lose it."

She had smiled.

"I'll treasure your deeply emotional speech."

He had almost smiled back.

Almost.

Now her desk was empty.

"Call Leo," Damian said.

Bruno was already reaching for his phone.

"Send him to Brooklyn."

Damian entered his office.

He attempted to continue his schedule.

At 8:20, three representatives from a construction union entered for a negotiation.

Damian heard perhaps half of what they said.

At 8:34, his phone vibrated.

LEO.

He answered immediately.

"Talk."

Leo didn't waste time.

"Boss, I'm at her apartment."

Damian stood.

"Is she there?"

"No."

A pause followed.

"But somebody was."

Damian's fingers tightened around the phone.

"What does that mean?"

"The front door is damaged. Apartment's been turned over. There's blood in the kitchen."

Silence.

For the first time, the men sitting across from Damian saw something change in his face.

Not panic.

Something worse.

"How much?"

"Not enough to tell us anything."

"Stay there."

Damian ended the call and walked out.

Nobody tried to stop him.

Twenty minutes later, his armored SUV pulled onto Khloe's street in Cobble Hill.

Damian had secretly purchased the brownstone building a year earlier after learning that its previous owner planned to sell.

Khloe still believed she rented from a quiet investment company.

Damian preferred it that way.

He had upgraded the security.

Installed cameras.

Reinforced entrances.

Vetted maintenance workers.

It hadn't mattered.

Khloe's apartment door hung broken from the frame.

Damian entered.

The living room was chaos.

A reading chair had been overturned.

Books covered the floor.

A vase of white lilies had shattered beside the kitchen.

Damian stared at them.

He had sent those flowers.

Anonymously.

Then he saw the dark stain on the kitchen island.

His chest tightened.

"Boss."

Leo stood beside the window.

"Camera system was looped shortly after two this morning. Whoever did this knew exactly where the blind spots were."

Damian crouched beside the stain.

"Anything stolen?"

"No."

"Computer?"

"Still here."

"Jewelry?"

"Bedroom drawer wasn't touched."

Damian stood.

"Then they didn't come for property."

Leo nodded.

"They came for her."

Something metallic glinted beneath the refrigerator.

Damian bent down.

A brass casing.

He picked it up.

A tiny shamrock had been etched into its side.

Damian's expression hardened.

"Walsh."

Declan Walsh had spent the last year attempting to rebuild an Irish organization in Hell's Kitchen.

Damian controlled shipping routes Walsh wanted.

Negotiations had failed.

Threats followed.

Then warehouses began changing hands.

But even Declan had never done something this reckless.

Until now.

Damian closed his fist around the casing.

"Find him."

For the next eleven hours, Manhattan became very uncomfortable for anyone associated with Declan Walsh.

Cars were followed.

Warehouses were searched.

Phones were traced.

At 9:17 that evening, Leo entered Damian's office carrying a tablet.

"We found something."

Damian looked up.

"A delivery van left Brooklyn around 2:40 a.m. Traffic cameras caught it entering Manhattan."

"Where?"

"West Side."

Leo placed the tablet on the desk.

"We lost it for twenty minutes. Then another camera caught it entering a property on Eleventh Avenue."

Damian recognized the building.

An abandoned industrial storage facility.

Formerly owned by Walsh.

"How many men?"

"We don't know."

Damian stood.

"Get the cars."

Forty minutes later, Damian entered the building with Leo, Bruno, and several trusted men.

The upper floors were empty.

So was the loading dock.

Then Bruno discovered stairs leading underground.

The basement smelled of rust, damp concrete, and old machinery.

Damian descended first.

"Boss."

Leo pointed toward the floor.

Something lay beside a wall.

Damian approached.

His heart stopped.

A watch.

The crystal was shattered.

The leather strap torn.

He recognized it immediately.

The Patek Philippe.

Khloe's birthday gift.

Damian picked it up.

A faint stain marked the concrete beside it.

"Khloe!"

His voice echoed through the basement.

Nothing.

Then—

A sound.

Soft.

Almost impossible to hear.

Damian turned.

There was an iron door at the end of the corridor.

He approached.

"Khloe?"

Silence.

Then something scraped behind it.

Damian grabbed the handle.

Locked.

"Move," Leo said.

Damian didn't.

He slammed his shoulder against it.

Once.

Again.

The old frame groaned.

On the third strike, the locking mechanism broke.

The door swung inward.

Damian stepped inside.

And froze.

Khloe sat against the concrete wall.

Her cream blouse was dirty. Her long brown hair hung tangled around her face. Marks covered her wrists where restraints had been removed.

But she was alive.

Her eyes slowly opened.

They found him.

"Damian?"

He crossed the room and dropped beside her.

His hands, normally steady even in the worst circumstances, trembled as he touched her face.

"I'm here."

Khloe gripped his shirt.

For one second, Damian forgot that anyone else existed.

Then Khloe looked over his shoulder.

Her expression changed.

Fear.

Not of the basement.

Not of Walsh.

Of someone standing behind Damian.

"What's wrong?" he whispered.

Khloe swallowed.

"They wanted you to find me."

Damian became still.

"What?"

She tightened her grip on his shirt.

"This wasn't about me."

Her eyes moved toward the men in the doorway.

"Someone inside your organization helped them."

May you like

And then she whispered a name.

A name Damian had trusted for fifteen years.
