Chapter 3 - The Secret Khloe Kept

Damian returned to the medical suite before dawn.
Khloe was awake.
She knew immediately that something had changed.
"You talked to someone."
"Vincent."
Her face lost color.
That was confirmation.
Damian closed the door.
"Three years."
Khloe looked away.
"Damian—"
"Three years you knew."
"I knew part of it."
"Then tell me the rest."
Khloe slowly sat upright.
When she had first been assigned to repair the Russo financial network, she had discovered an encrypted account buried beneath dozens of shell companies.
It wasn't filled with money.
It contained documents.
Ledgers.
Names.
Payments.
Records Antonio Russo had apparently collected against his own organization.
Damian's father had been building an archive.
"Why?"
"I didn't know," Khloe said.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because there was another file."
Damian waited.
Khloe looked directly at him.
"It had your name."
He became still.
"What did it say?"
"I couldn't open it."
"Where is this archive?"
"I moved it."
Damian stared at her.
"You moved my father's files?"
"I protected them."
"From me?"
"From everyone."
He turned away.
Khloe climbed carefully from the bed.
"Damian."
"You should have told me."
"I was afraid of what it would do to you."
He faced her.
"You don't get to decide that."
"No."
Her voice cracked.
"But three years ago, I barely knew you. I was working off my father's debt inside an organization I didn't understand. Then I found evidence suggesting someone inside your family may have killed your father."
Damian's anger disappeared.
"Say that again."
Khloe swallowed.
"Antonio Russo wasn't preparing those files for law enforcement."
"Then who?"
"You."
She explained.
There was a scheduled message buried in the archive.
It had never been delivered.
Addressed to Damian.
The first line read:
If you're reading this, I failed to get us out.
Damian sat down.
For twelve years, he had believed his father died while still committed to the empire.
Now that certainty fractured.
Khloe continued.
Antonio had apparently wanted to dismantle the criminal side of the organization and preserve only its legitimate businesses.
Someone discovered his plan.
Weeks later, he died.
"Who?" Damian asked.
"I don't know."
"Walsh?"
"No. Walsh wasn't powerful enough then."
"Vincent?"
"I don't think so."
Damian looked toward the windows.
"Where are the files?"
Khloe hesitated.
"Somewhere only I can access."
"Take me."
An hour later, they left through a private garage.
No Bruno.
No large security team.
Only Leo drove.
Khloe directed them to an old bank building in Brooklyn Heights.
Inside was a private vault service.
She retrieved a small metal box.
Damian watched her unlock it.
Inside was a flash drive and a sealed letter.
His name was written across the envelope.
Damian recognized the handwriting.
His father's.
His hands remained motionless.
Khloe touched his arm.
"You don't have to open it here."
"Yes, I do."
He broke the seal.
Damian,
If this reaches you, then I ran out of time.
What I built became something I no longer recognize.
I told myself I was protecting our family. Eventually I understood I was only teaching you to inherit my mistakes.
There are people around us who will never allow the Russo organization to become legitimate.
One of them is closer to you than you can imagine.
Damian stopped.
Below that line was a name.
He read it twice.
Then a third time.
Leo noticed his expression.
"Boss?"
Damian slowly lowered the letter.
"My uncle."
Salvatore Russo.
His father's younger brother.
The man who had raised Damian after Antonio's death.
The man Damian called Uncle Sal.
Khloe stared at him.
"There is more."
Damian continued reading.
Antonio claimed Salvatore had secretly expanded trafficking operations without his approval and built alliances with corrupt officials.
When Antonio threatened to expose him, Salvatore retaliated.
But the final paragraph was incomplete.
The letter ended abruptly.
Damian looked inside the envelope.
Nothing else.
"Drive," he told Leo.
"Where?"
"Sal's house."
Khloe caught his arm.
"Damian, wait."
He looked at her.
"If Salvatore knows those files still exist, he'll know you're alive."
"He already knows."
"How?"
Khloe's expression became troubled.
"Because when they held me in that basement, one of the men asked me a question."
"What question?"
"He asked where Antonio's letter was."
Damian froze.
"Nobody knew about that letter."
"I know."
"Except you."
"And whoever originally created the archive."
Damian's eyes narrowed.
Khloe continued.
"Which means if Salvatore knew about it, he may have been inside your father's system before Antonio died."
Damian's phone rang.
Leo answered.
His face changed.
"Boss."
"What?"
"Salvatore's house."
Leo listened.
Then lowered the phone.
"It's empty."
Damian stared through the windshield.
"Where is he?"
"Nobody knows."
Khloe looked at the flash drive.
"Maybe this tells us."
They returned to a secure office and opened the archive.
Most files were exactly as Khloe remembered.
But one folder was new.
Created six hours earlier.
Someone had accessed the archive remotely.
Damian opened it.
One video file.
He clicked.
Salvatore appeared on screen.
Older now.
Gray-haired.
Calm.
"Damian," he began.
"If you're watching this, Khloe finally showed you the truth."
Damian's jaw tightened.
Salvatore smiled.
"But she hasn't shown you all of it."
The video continued.
"Ask her what happened the night your father died."
Damian slowly turned toward Khloe.
She stared at the screen.
Confused.

Then Salvatore delivered the sentence that changed everything.
"Because Khloe's father was there."
