Chapter 5 - The Last Betrayal

Damian had no intention of obeying Salvatore.

At least, not literally.

He arrived at the property with Khloe shortly before dawn.

But Leo and a trusted team were positioned outside the perimeter.

Khloe wore a concealed transmitter.

Damian had another.

The farmhouse appeared abandoned.

Inside, Salvatore waited.

Thomas Hayes sat nearby.

Older.

Thinner.

But alive.

"Khloe."

Thomas's voice broke.

"Dad."

She started forward.

Damian stopped her gently.

Salvatore smiled.

"Still careful. Just like Antonio."

"Let him go," Damian said.

"Eventually."

Vincent stood beside the window.

Damian looked at him.

"You lied."

Vincent shook his head.

"I survived."

"There's a difference?"

"Sometimes not."

Salvatore laughed.

"Your father never understood that either."

Damian looked at his uncle.

"You killed him."

Salvatore's smile disappeared.

"I gave him a choice."

"What choice?"

"Family or betrayal."

"He wanted to end the organization."

"He wanted to destroy everything our family built."

Damian's voice remained quiet.

"So you killed your brother."

Salvatore did not deny it.

Khloe looked toward her father.

Thomas lowered his head.

He had witnessed the confrontation twelve years earlier.

Salvatore had forced him to alter records afterward.

That was why Thomas had spent years running.

"But why take Khloe now?" Damian asked.

"Because Antonio's archive became active."

Salvatore looked toward her.

"When she accessed it three years ago, I received an alert."

Khloe frowned.

"Then why wait?"

"Because I didn't know where she'd moved the files."

Salvatore needed Khloe alive.

Declan Walsh had merely been a tool.

Bruno another.

Vincent another.

Every betrayal had been engineered to push Damian toward the archive.

"You wanted me to lead you to it," Damian said.

"Exactly."

Salvatore smiled.

"And you did."

Damian looked toward Vincent.

"Where's Walsh?"

"Gone," Salvatore replied.

Damian understood the implication without asking.

Salvatore continued.

"Now give me the drive."

Damian reached inside his jacket.

He removed it.

Khloe looked at him.

"Damian."

He held it up.

"This?"

Salvatore's eyes sharpened.

"Put it on the table."

Damian did.

Salvatore reached for it.

Then Damian smiled.

Salvatore stopped.

"What?"

"You raised me."

Damian's voice was almost gentle.

"You taught me never to bring the real thing to a negotiation."

Salvatore stared.

The drive was a copy.

More importantly, the archive had already been duplicated.

Encrypted copies had been distributed to attorneys with instructions tied to Damian's survival.

Salvatore's leverage disappeared.

His calm finally cracked.

"You think you've won?"

"No."

Damian looked around the farmhouse.

"I think I'm finished playing."

Outside, vehicles approached.

Not Russo soldiers.

Federal agents.

Salvatore stared toward the windows.

Khloe looked at Damian in shock.

"What did you do?"

"What my father couldn't."

Damian had made a decision before arriving.

The criminal empire ended today.

Antonio's archive contained enough evidence to dismantle decades of corruption.

Damian had spent the previous hours negotiating through attorneys.

Information in exchange for protection for innocent employees, Khloe, Thomas, and others who had been trapped by the organization.

It would cost Damian almost everything.

But it would end the cycle.

Salvatore looked at him with disbelief.

"You gave them the organization?"

Damian nodded.

"You surrendered?"

"No."

He looked at Khloe.

"I chose something else."

Agents entered moments later.

Salvatore was arrested.

Vincent surrendered.

Thomas was freed.

And Damian Russo, the supposedly untouchable king of New York's underworld, walked outside without resistance.

Khloe followed.

"Damian."

He turned.

"What happens to you?"

He looked toward the approaching agents.

"I don't know."

Her eyes filled.

"You can't just disappear."

A faint smile touched his face.

"You disappeared first."

"This isn't funny."

"No."

He stepped closer.

"It isn't."

For the first time in three years, Damian touched her face without pretending it meant something else.

"I should have told you sooner."

"Told me what?"

His thumb brushed gently beneath her eye.

"That there was never a room you entered that I didn't notice."

Khloe's breath trembled.

Then agents approached.

Damian stepped away.

But before he could leave, Thomas called his name.

"Damian."

He turned.

Thomas held something.

A sealed envelope.

"I found this years ago."

Damian recognized his father's handwriting.

Thomas handed it over.

"It's the missing final page."

Damian opened it.

One paragraph.

One final message from Antonio.

And the last sentence made Damian close his eyes.

Because his father had predicted exactly what Damian would eventually have to do.
