Chapter 14 - A Name on the Door

Elias and Aayoka married in early autumn.

There was no grand ceremony.

No expensive clothing.

No orchestra.

Just friends.

Food.

Music.

And vows spoken beneath an enormous Arizona sky.

Afterward, Elias carried Aayoka across the threshold of the new house.

She immediately objected.

“I can walk.”

“I know.”

“Then put me down.”

“No.”

She laughed.

He realized he loved that sound.

Above the doorway, Elias had carved two names.

WARD — AAYOKA.

She touched the carving.

“You put mine beside yours.”

“That's where it belongs.”

For a man who had spent twelve years avoiding permanence, carving a name into wood felt almost revolutionary.
