Chapter 13 - The Building with His Name

I almost refused the name.
Leo would have hated attention.
So we compromised.
The front sign read:
THE LADDER CENTER
Inside, a smaller plaque said:
Inspired by Leo Mercer, who believed nobody should climb alone.
That felt right.
We built résumé stations.
Interview rooms.
Training workshops.
A transportation assistance desk.
Connections to licensed mental-health professionals and community resources.
A kitchen.
That kitchen mattered to me.
One evening, I found a young man sitting there with cereal.
For a second, time stopped.
Gray hoodie.
Dark hair.
Head down.
My heart slammed against my ribs.
He wasn’t Leo.
Of course he wasn’t.
His name was Evan.
“Long day?” I asked.
He nodded.
I almost said something about work.
Instead:
“How are you really doing?”
Evan stared at me.
Then his face crumpled.
I sat down.
And listened.
Later, alone in my office, I looked at Leo’s photograph.
“I learned, kid.”
It had taken the worst lesson imaginable.
May you like
But I had learned.
