Chapter 17 - The Call at 2:03 A.M.

Three years after Leo’s death, my phone rang after two in the morning.

I answered immediately.

“Jack?”

It was Frank.

“My grandson called me.”

“What happened?”

“He says his dad is having a really bad night.”

Caleb.

We moved quickly.

Family.

Professionals.

Support.

Nobody tried to handle a crisis through pride.

By sunrise, Caleb was safe and receiving care.

Frank called me from the parking lot.

“I almost yelled at him.”

“But you didn’t.”

“I heard your voice.”

“What did it say?”

Frank laughed through tears.

“Shut up and listen.”

I smiled.

“That does sound like me now.”

Then he became serious.

“Jack?”

“Yeah?”

“Leo saved people he never met.”

I looked toward the framed photograph beside my bed.

For years, that idea had made me uncomfortable.

Leo hadn’t died for a purpose.

I would never romanticize his death that way.

His death was a loss.

Full stop.

But his life?

His life had meaning.

His ideas had meaning.

And what we chose to build afterward had meaning too.

Those truths could coexist.
