Chapter 15 - The Job Fair Nobody Expected

Our first Ladder job fair drew more than nine hundred people.
Employers were instructed to remove unnecessary experience requirements from genuine entry-level roles.
We offered private interview coaching.
Transportation vouchers.
Quiet spaces.
Resource tables.
No motivational slogans.
No “hustle harder” banners.
Just practical help.
Tyler, our first apprentice, arrived wearing a supervisor badge.
“Look at you,” I said.
He grinned.
“You hired me.”
“No. You earned it.”
He shook his head.
“You opened the door.”
That distinction mattered.
People need opportunity.
They still walk through it themselves.
By sunset, 146 interviews had been scheduled.
Thirty-two conditional offers were made.
But my favorite moment happened outside.
A father and daughter sat on the curb.
She was crying.
He wasn’t fixing anything.
He simply had his arm around her.
I walked past.
The father recognized me.
He mouthed:
Listening.
I nodded.
