Chapter 15 - The Eleven Million Dollars

Recovering the stolen money took months.

Some had gone overseas.

Some had purchased property.

Some had funded Kessler's political network and private interests.

But investigators recovered most of it.

I made one decision immediately.

Not one dollar would return to me personally.

Every recovered cent went back to veterans and their families.

Then I added twenty million dollars from my inheritance.

Henry nearly fell out of his chair.

“Claire.”

“What?”

“Twenty million?”

“Dad built that foundation to help people.”

“He also left you a fortune.”

“And I'm keeping plenty.”

Daniel smiled from the corner.

Henry pointed at him.

“Stop encouraging her.”

“I didn't say anything.”

“You have a face.”

That made me laugh.

Something inside me loosened.

The foundation reopened under independent oversight.

No family control.

No political donors on the board.

Public audits.

Dad would have complained about the paperwork.

Then secretly loved every page.

But one problem remained.

Grant.

His attorneys wanted a plea agreement.

And part of that agreement required him to testify publicly.

May you like

Which meant I would have to see my husband again.
