Chapter 18 - The House That Became Home Again

Two years after Dad's death, Vale House changed.

I removed the formal dining table where Celeste had tried to take my inheritance.

In its place, we built a long oak table.

Veterans ate there.

Scholarship students ate there.

Widows and children ate there.

The map room remained untouched except for one thing.

Dad's chessboard now sat beneath glass.

The missing white king rested beside it.

Daniel visited more often than necessary.

At first, we pretended it was foundation business.

Then Henry stopped pretending for us.

One evening, Daniel and I stood on the terrace.

“You know,” I said, “Dad would interrogate you.”

“He already did.”

I turned.

“What?”

“For years.”

“About what?”

Daniel smiled.

“You.”

I stared at him.

He explained that Dad had once noticed Daniel looking at me during a foundation gala.

Dad cornered him afterward.

“What did he say?”

Daniel straightened his shoulders, imitating Dad.

“Colonel, if you break my daughter's heart, they'll never find enough of you to hold a funeral.”

I laughed so hard I cried.

Then the laughter faded.

Daniel looked at me.

No dramatic music.

No perfect speech.

No promises.

Just patience.

He reached for my hand.

And for the first time since Grant, I didn't pull away.

Dad's letter came back to me.

Trust carefully. But trust.

May you like

So I did.
