Chapter 9 - The Woman Dad Tried to Save

Rosa wasn't the only witness.
There was another.
Margaret Cole, former accountant for the foundation.
She had disappeared eleven months earlier.
Dad had helped her disappear.
Daniel found her in Maine.
Margaret had copied everything.
Payments.
Invoices.
Messages.
And one recording.
Celeste's voice.
Grant's voice.
Discussing how long they needed to keep Dad “quiet.”
Not kill.
Quiet.
But then Dad discovered Grant's involvement.
The plan changed.
Margaret also revealed the reason Daniel's death had been staged.
He had found evidence connecting a defense contractor to the charity fraud.
Someone tried to kill him overseas.
Dad realized the conspiracy was larger than Celeste.
So he buried Daniel on paper.
A funeral.
A flag.
A sealed record.
Then he hid him.
I finally understood why Dad had cried at Daniel's memorial.
He wasn't mourning Daniel.
He was mourning the fact that keeping him alive required lying to everyone he loved.
Including me.
But Margaret's evidence contained one name we hadn't expected.
A man who would be attending Dad's will reading.
And if we exposed Celeste too soon, he would disappear.

So we invited everyone.
