Chapter 3 - The Account I Never Knew Existed

The document was an application for a private loan.

My name appeared on it.

So did Adam’s.

The problem was simple.

I had never signed it.

I looked at the amount.

$84,000.

“Adam?”

He said nothing.

I turned another page.

A joint savings account I thought contained nearly $96,000 showed repeated transfers over the previous six months.

$8,500.

$12,000.

$6,700.

$14,300.

My hands started shaking.

“That’s our house fund.”

Adam lowered his voice.

“We can talk about finances privately.”

Vanessa laughed again.

“Now you want privacy?”

He glared at her.

I ignored them both.

“What does Grace have to do with this?”

Vanessa pointed to the third page.

It was an insurance document.

Adam had increased a policy shortly after Grace’s birth.

Nothing illegal about that by itself.

But my signature appeared there too.

Again, I hadn’t signed it.

Margaret whispered, “Oh my God.”

Adam moved closer.

“Emily, those are copies. You don’t know what she changed.”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“I downloaded them from the company system because you told me to process them.”

Adam stared at her.

“You’re admitting you stole confidential records?”

“No. I’m admitting I kept evidence.”

The reunion had effectively ended.

Relatives were standing silently around the yard.

I hated that they were watching.

But Adam had counted on that.

He had counted on my embarrassment keeping me quiet.

It almost worked.

Then Grace made a tiny sound against my chest.

I looked down.

Her eyes were closed.

She trusted me without understanding what trust meant.

And suddenly I didn’t care who was watching.

“Why did you forge my signature?”

“I didn't.”

“Then who did?”

No answer.

Robert stepped forward.

“Son.”

Adam looked at him.

“Tell your wife the truth.”

Adam's expression changed.

For the first time, his confidence cracked.

“You think you know everything because of a few security videos?”

“No,” Robert said. “I know because you asked me for money.”

Margaret turned toward her husband.

“What?”

Robert looked ashamed.

“Three months ago.”

“How much?”

“Fifty thousand.”

Margaret stared at him.

“You never told me.”

“I didn't give it to him.”

Adam snapped, “Because it was none of your business.”

Robert’s voice rose for the first time.

“You said Emily knew!”

I felt dizzy.

“Knew what?”

Robert looked at me.

“He said you two had made an investment that went bad.”

I turned to Adam.

“What investment?”

Silence.

Vanessa answered.

“Land.”

Adam closed his eyes.

She continued.

“Forty acres outside Millbrook.”

I knew the property.

Adam had mentioned it casually months earlier.

He said a developer from his company was considering buying it.

Vanessa handed me another page.

Adam had bought into the property with two partners.

One partner was Vanessa’s brother.

The deal collapsed.

Adam lost almost everything.

Our savings.

The borrowed money.

And apparently money obtained using my signature.

“How much?” I whispered.

Vanessa hesitated.

“How much did he lose?”

“About two hundred and thirty thousand dollars.”

Margaret sat down.

Robert stared at his son.

I couldn't speak.

Adam finally said, “I was going to fix it.”

That sentence was almost absurd.

“With what?”

“The property could still sell.”

“You forged my name.”

“I was protecting us.”

“From what? Knowing?”

He stepped closer.

“I didn't want you panicking after Grace was born.”

I stared at him.

He actually believed that sounded reasonable.

Then Vanessa said something unexpected.

“The loan isn't the reason I came today.”

Adam turned.

“Stop.”

She ignored him.

“He called me last night.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why?”

Vanessa looked toward Grace.

“He wanted me to help him change something.”

“What?”

She reached into her purse again.

This time she removed a flash drive.

Adam lunged forward.

Robert caught his arm.

“What’s on it?” I asked.

Vanessa swallowed.

“Audio from last night.”

Adam stopped struggling.

His face lost its color.

Vanessa held the drive toward me.

“He didn't know my phone was recording.”

“What did he say?”

She looked directly into my eyes.

“He said after today, you wouldn't be able to control the money anymore.”

I stared at her.

Then she added the sentence that changed the direction of everything.

May you like

“And he said his plan depended on making everyone believe you were an unstable mother.”
