Chapter 6 - Apartment 314

We did not go to the apartment.

Rachel was adamant about that.

“Evidence first. Confrontation later, if ever.”

Instead, she hired a licensed investigator.

By Monday afternoon, we had photographs.

Adam entering Apartment 314.

Vanessa entering it on separate occasions.

But Vanessa wasn't living there.

A man named Tyler Grant was.

Tyler had been Adam’s business partner in the failed land investment.

That changed the picture again.

This wasn't merely an affair.

It was financial.

Tyler had been using the apartment as an unofficial office.

Documents recovered through lawful financial channels eventually showed that Adam, Tyler, and Vanessa’s brother had created a company.

North Ridge Development LLC.

Adam had invested our savings.

Then borrowed more.

Then lost it.

But instead of admitting what happened, he doubled down.

He used my identity to obtain credit.

He intended to refinance our home.

And when I refused to sign the paperwork two weeks after Grace’s birth, his behavior toward me changed.

I remembered that argument.

Adam had called the refinance “routine.”

I said no.

He had slept in the guest room.

Three days later, he started telling relatives I was emotionally unstable.

Rachel listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she said, “Patterns matter.”

Tuesday morning, Adam filed for temporary custody.

Exactly as promised.

His petition described me as erratic.

Overwhelmed.

Unpredictable.

He referenced the reunion.

He claimed I had “abruptly removed the infant from a safe family environment following an emotional outburst.”

I stared at the sentence.

Safe family environment.

The animal pen had disappeared entirely from his version.

So had the security video.

So had his access code.

So had Vanessa.

So had the bottle outside the gate.

Rachel smiled without humor.

“He doesn't know what we have.”

Adam was about to find out.

At the emergency hearing, he arrived wearing a navy suit.

He looked rested.

Prepared.

Concerned.

The perfect worried father.

Then Robert entered behind me.

Adam’s expression changed.

Margaret followed.

Then Vanessa.

Adam turned toward his lawyer.

Craig Benton looked equally surprised.

Rachel placed a folder on the table.

The judge entered.

Adam testified first.

He spoke gently.

Carefully.

He said he loved me.

He said he worried about my stress.

He said he wanted only to protect Grace.

Then Rachel stood.

“Mr. Carson, did you open the unused livestock enclosure at approximately 2:14 p.m. Saturday?”

Adam hesitated.

“I may have.”

“Your security code did.”

“Yes.”

“Were you carrying your daughter?”

Pause.

“Yes.”

“Did you place her there?”

“My father was nearby.”

“That wasn't my question.”

Adam looked toward Craig.

Craig whispered something.

“Yes.”

Rachel displayed the security footage.

Then Robert testified.

Then the medical documentation was introduced.

Then came Adam’s text to Craig.

IT WILL.

Craig closed his eyes.

The judge read it.

“What did you mean by that, Mr. Carson?”

Adam had no good answer.

The temporary custody request was denied.

But that wasn't the end.

As we left court, Vanessa caught my arm.

“I need to tell you something.”

I stopped.

“What?”

She glanced toward Adam.

“He thinks the money is gone.”

“What do you mean?”

“It isn't.”

I stared at her.

“Where is it?”

Vanessa handed Rachel a piece of paper.

An account number.

“He moved part of it.”

“How much?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“Almost ninety thousand dollars.”

Rachel asked the obvious question.

“Where?”

Vanessa’s answer surprised all of us.

May you like

“An account opened in Grace’s name.”
