Chapter 7 - The Money Under My Daughter’s Name

Adam had used Grace as camouflage.

The account was custodial in appearance but connected to one of his business entities.

Rachel immediately began the legal process necessary to preserve records and prevent further transfers.

The deeper investigators looked, the worse it became.

Adam hadn't planned one lie.

He had built a system.

Money moved between accounts.

Debts appeared under my identity.

Business expenses were disguised as household expenses.

And Grace’s name had been used on paperwork she was far too young to understand.

But the most painful betrayal wasn't financial.

It was personal.

Adam had spent months convincing people I couldn't be trusted.

My sister remembered him calling her.

My neighbor remembered comments.

Even our pediatric nurse recalled Adam repeatedly emphasizing how “overwhelmed” I seemed.

He was creating witnesses.

Not to reality.

To his version of it.

Yet Adam had made one enormous mistake.

He had underestimated his own parents.

Robert turned over every security recording.

Margaret gave Rachel screenshots.

Neither asked me to forgive Adam.

Neither pressured me to preserve the marriage.

“He has to face what he did,” Robert said.

Three weeks after the reunion, I filed for divorce.

Adam called me that night.

I almost didn't answer.

Rachel had advised me to keep communication written whenever possible.

But something made me pick up.

“Emily.”

His voice sounded tired.

“What?”

“I want my family back.”

I looked at Grace sleeping beside me.

“You should have thought about your family before you turned our daughter into part of a plan.”

“I made mistakes.”

“Putting her in that pen wasn't a mistake.”

Silence.

“It was a decision.”

He breathed heavily.

“I didn't hurt her.”

“You used her.”

Another silence.

Then his voice changed.

“You think my parents are going to keep supporting you?”

“This isn't about them.”

“They're my parents.”

“They're Grace’s grandparents.”

He hung up.

The next morning, Robert called.

“Someone broke into the farm office.”

My stomach tightened.

“What was taken?”

“Adam’s box.”

The original documents.

Gone.

But Robert had made copies.

And the security system had recorded the intruder.

Not Adam.

Tyler Grant.

Police became involved.

Tyler was questioned.

Within forty-eight hours, he started talking.

And what he told investigators transformed Adam’s failed investment into something potentially much more serious.

The land deal hadn't simply failed.

Certain investors had been misled.

Documents had been altered.

Money had been moved after losses became obvious.

Adam hadn't been merely desperate.

He had been hiding something.

Tyler produced emails.

One included a message from Adam:

IF EMILY FINDS OUT, EVERYTHING FALLS APART.

Another said:

AFTER THE REUNION I’LL HAVE CONTROL.

I read those words in Rachel’s office.

Control.

That was what this had always been about.

Not a crying baby.

Not a reunion.

Not even money.

Control.

Rachel closed the file.

“There will probably be a criminal investigation.”

I looked at Grace.

I thought that would be the biggest turning point.

I was wrong.

Because that evening Margaret arrived at Diane’s house carrying a sealed envelope.

“I found this behind Adam’s desk.”

She handed it to me.

Across the front, in Adam’s handwriting, were four words:

May you like

IF EMILY LEAVES ME.
