Chapter 12 - The Town That Thought Dad Was Dead

Dad became a minor local legend.

People stopped him at the grocery store.

“You’re the dead guy!”

He hated it.

Harold loved it.

For Dad’s seventy-second birthday, Harold had a cake made.

Across the top:

STILL NOT DEAD.

Dad threatened to throw it at him.

Then ate two pieces.

Humor returned slowly.

So did normal life.

But Dad changed.

He began volunteering at the local trade school.

The scholarship trust he created funded its first three students.

One was a nineteen-year-old single mother studying electrical work.

Another was a young man whose father had died.

The third had spent years bouncing between foster homes.

Dad attended their graduation.

Watching him shake their hands, I realized Vanessa’s betrayal had accidentally forced Dad to decide what he wanted his life to mean.

Not what he wanted to leave.

What he wanted to do while alive.

That distinction mattered.

One evening Dad and I sat on his porch.

“Do you regret changing the will?” I asked.

“No.”

“Even if Vanessa changes?”

“The trust isn’t punishment.”

He looked across the yard.

“It’s purpose.”

I understood.

Vanessa’s future relationship with Dad would not depend on inheritance.

For the first time, she had the chance to love him without wondering what she would receive.

And Dad had the chance to love her without buying peace.
