Chapter 13 - The Call I Almost Didn’t Answer

A year after the original call, my phone rang at 6:31 a.m.
Vanessa.
My entire body reacted before my mind did.
For one terrible second, I was back in my kitchen.
Dad eating bacon.
Vanessa saying he was dead.
I answered.
“What happened?”
Vanessa was crying.
But this time, the tears were real.
“Dad fell.”
I stood immediately.
“Where?”
“His driveway. He slipped on ice.”
“Is he conscious?”
“Yes. Ambulance is here.”
My heart hammered.
“I’m coming.”
Then Vanessa said something that made me stop.
“Natalie, I’m not asking you for anything. I just knew you’d want to know.”
That sentence mattered.
I drove through a snowstorm.
Dad had fractured his wrist and bruised his hip.
Nothing life-threatening.
When I reached the hospital, Vanessa was sitting beside him.
Dad looked miserable.
“Everybody needs to stop acting like I’m ninety.”
“You fell wearing slippers on ice,” I said.
“I was getting the newspaper.”
“You own a phone.”
“The newspaper doesn’t fit on my phone.”
Vanessa laughed.
Dad looked at both of us.
Then he smiled.
It was the first time the three of us had laughed together since Mom died.
No dramatic reconciliation happened.
No music played.
Nobody delivered a speech.
But when Vanessa stood to leave, Dad said:
“Same time next Sunday?”
Vanessa froze.
“For dinner?”
Dad nodded.
“If you want.”
She smiled.
“I want.”
