Chapter 2 - The Words Behind the Glass

Emily had learned to read lips before she learned to write her own name.

Her mother had once explained this to Alexander while the security footage remained frozen on the screen.

“When she was little,” Maria said quietly, “she hated feeling left out. She started watching people’s mouths. Doctors said she became unusually good at it.”

Emily sat beside her mother, the stuffed rabbit tucked under one arm.

Alexander looked at the child.

“How good?”

Maria hesitated.

“Very.”

Vanessa scoffed.

“This is insane.”

Daniel Ross glanced toward her.

“No one asked you.”

The billionaire’s fiancée looked furious.

She had never been spoken to that way inside Alexander Bennett’s house.

Until tonight, everyone had treated her as the future Mrs. Bennett.

That future now seemed uncertain.

Alexander turned back toward Emily.

“Can you tell me what they said?”

He signed as he spoke.

Emily stared at the frozen footage.

Her hands did not move.

Alexander could see she was afraid.

He crouched beside her.

“You aren’t in trouble.”

Emily looked at her mother.

Maria nodded.

“It’s okay, sweetheart.”

Emily swallowed.

Then looked at the monitor.

Daniel restarted the video at one-quarter speed.

Vanessa appeared first.

She placed several tablets on the counter.

Dr. Hale entered seconds later.

Their faces were visible from the camera angle.

Emily watched.

Her fingers started moving.

Alexander translated aloud.

“He says… ‘You need to increase the dose.’”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Hale stared at Emily.

Daniel paused the footage.

“Continue.”

The recording resumed.

Emily watched Vanessa’s mouth.

“She says… ‘He’s already forgetting meetings.’”

Alexander felt something dark twist inside him.

Emily continued.

“She says… ‘Yesterday he couldn’t remember the board presentation.’”

Alexander closed his eyes briefly.

That had happened.

Vanessa had been the one who comforted him afterward.

She had told him he was exhausted.

She had encouraged him to let Dr. Hale increase his medication.

The recording continued.

Emily watched Hale.

“He says… ‘Good. We need documented decline.’”

Alexander looked toward Hale.

The physician said nothing.

Emily’s hands moved faster.

“‘Once the board believes he’s incompetent, they’ll force a medical evaluation.’”

Daniel stopped the video again.

Alexander’s voice was dangerously quiet.

“And then?”

Emily looked at Vanessa.

She watched the next sentence.

“‘Once he’s declared incompetent, you control his voting shares.’”

Several people in the room gasped.

Vanessa stood.

“This is absurd.”

Daniel’s guards stepped closer.

Alexander did not even look at her.

“Sit.”

“I will not sit here and let a child invent—”

Emily suddenly signed something.

Alexander’s head snapped toward her.

“What?”

She repeated it.

Alexander stared at Vanessa.

“She says you asked about Maria.”

Vanessa stopped.

The room became absolutely still.

Daniel restarted the footage.

On the screen, Vanessa glanced toward the corner of the kitchen.

Emily had apparently been sleeping there on several folded towels, her rabbit tucked beneath her chin.

Vanessa’s lips moved.

Emily translated.

“She says, ‘What about the maid?’”

Hale answered.

Emily watched carefully.

Then her hands slowed.

Alexander translated.

“‘After this is finished, she goes.’”

Maria stared at the screen.

Her eyes widened.

Emily watched the next sentence.

Hale looked toward the sleeping child.

His mouth moved.

Emily signed.

“‘The girl cannot hear us.’”

Nobody breathed.

Emily’s face changed.

For the first time, there was something almost defiant in her expression.

Then she signed the final line.

I CAN READ LIPS.

Alexander stood.

Dr. Hale moved toward the door.

Daniel caught him before he made two steps.

“Get off me.”

“You’re not leaving.”

“You have no legal authority to imprison me.”

Daniel smiled without humor.

“The police are already coming.”

Hale went pale.

Vanessa turned toward Alexander.

“Alex, listen to me.”

He finally looked at her.

She approached slowly.

“I can explain.”

“You’ve had several months.”

“This footage doesn’t prove poisoning.”

Alexander pointed toward the bowl.

“The laboratory just proved poisoning.”

“The packet belonged to Maria.”

“The camera shows you crushing pills.”

“They were vitamins.”

Alexander almost laughed.

Instead he asked, “Why were you putting vitamins in my food without telling me?”

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Sirens sounded outside.

Maria pulled Emily closer.

Alexander looked toward the windows as police vehicles entered the estate.

He should have felt relief.

Instead, he felt something far worse.

Betrayal had a strange temperature.

Cold first.

Then burning.

He remembered Vanessa staying beside his bed during his weakest days.

She had brought him soup.

Tea.

Medication.

She had kissed his forehead.

“You need rest,” she would whisper.

All the while, she had been making him worse.

Police officers entered.

The packet was collected.

The soup was sealed as evidence.

Vanessa and Dr. Hale were separated and questioned.

Alexander gave his statement.

But even as the police worked, Daniel remained troubled.

He approached Alexander privately.

“There’s something you need to see.”

“What?”

“The camera archive.”

Alexander frowned.

“We saw it.”

“Not all of it.”

Daniel led him back to the security system.

“When Emily pointed us toward the camera, I checked the recent footage. But then I searched older recordings.”

“How far?”

“Six months.”

Alexander felt uneasy.

Daniel opened a folder.

“There are more nights.”

Dozens.

Vanessa entering the kitchen.

Hale meeting her.

Powder being crushed.

Food containers being opened.

Bottles exchanged.

Alexander’s stomach turned.

“It began before my symptoms.”

“Yes.”

“How much before?”

“Approximately three weeks.”

Alexander stared at the timestamps.

The scheme had been deliberate from the beginning.

Then Daniel opened another video.

“This one is different.”

The footage showed Dr. Hale entering the mansion’s office hallway late at night.

He unlocked Alexander’s private study.

“How does he have access?”

Daniel shook his head.

“He shouldn’t.”

The video showed Hale exiting twelve minutes later carrying a thin folder.

Alexander recognized it immediately.

Corporate governance documents.

Daniel looked at him.

“There may be more happening than medical poisoning.”

Alexander stared at the screen.

His company had recently suffered unusual boardroom pressure.

Three directors had questioned his mental fitness.

A confidential report had circulated suggesting cognitive decline.

One investor had demanded emergency succession planning.

Alexander had assumed the rumors came from his mistakes.

Now everything looked different.

“What documents were in that folder?”

“Proxy arrangements. Trust structures. Emergency voting provisions.”

Alexander’s eyes narrowed.

Those documents determined who controlled Bennett Global if he became medically incapacitated.

Vanessa.

As his future spouse and designated personal representative, she stood to gain extraordinary influence.

But not complete control.

Not unless something else happened.

Alexander opened his laptop.

He pulled up the latest corporate documents.

His stomach dropped.

A board amendment had been submitted three weeks earlier.

It authorized temporary transfer of his voting power upon medical certification by two physicians.

One of the certifying doctors listed was Richard Hale.

The second signature belonged to someone Alexander did not recognize.

Daniel leaned closer.

“That means this conspiracy extends beyond two people.”

Alexander looked toward the doorway where police were questioning Vanessa.

“How many?”

“We don’t know.”

For the first time that night, Alexander felt truly afraid.

Not for himself.

For Maria.

For Emily.

If Vanessa and Hale had spent months building a plan involving doctors, corporate documents, and board members, a maid and her daughter had just destroyed it.

People capable of poisoning a man for control of a billion-dollar company did not quietly accept defeat.

Alexander immediately found Daniel.

“Maria and Emily don’t leave this house alone.”

Maria overheard.

“Sir, I don’t want trouble.”

“You already protected me from it.”

“I need to take my daughter home.”

“No.”

Maria looked surprised.

Alexander softened his voice.

“Not tonight. Whoever else is involved now knows Emily can identify what happened.”

Maria’s face went pale.

Emily looked between them.

She understood none of the spoken words.

But she understood expressions.

Alexander crouched in front of her.

He signed carefully.

YOU SAVED ME.

Emily blinked.

Alexander continued.

NOW I KEEP YOU SAFE.

The little girl looked down at her rabbit.

Then back at him.

She gave a small nod.

Police finally escorted Vanessa and Hale from the mansion shortly before midnight.

Vanessa paused near Alexander.

“Do you really think you’ve won?”

Alexander stared at her.

She smiled.

Not the warm smile he had known.

Something colder.

“You still don’t know who started this.”

Daniel stepped forward.

Vanessa was taken outside.

Alexander stood motionless.

“What does that mean?” Maria whispered.

He did not answer.

Later that night, investigators found something inside Hale’s confiscated phone.

A chain of encrypted messages.

Most had been deleted.

One remained.

It was from an unknown number.

Three words appeared on the screen.

THE CHILD KNOWS.

Underneath was another message, sent only fourteen minutes after security locked the mansion doors.

HANDLE IT TONIGHT.

Alexander stared at the words.

Then looked toward the guest room where Emily was sleeping beside her mother.

Somewhere outside the mansion, another conspirator was still free.

And whoever it was already knew exactly who had exposed them.

May you like

Before sunrise, someone would make the first move.
