Chapter 6 - The Secret His Father Left Behind

Police surrounded Elliot before he made it ten feet.
Thomas attempted to run.
Daniel tackled him near the exit.
Within minutes, both men were in custody.
But Alexander barely noticed.
He stared at the photograph.
His father.
Edward Bennett.
Standing beside Thomas Reed and Richard Hale.
Nine years ago.
“What is this?” Alexander demanded.
Elliot laughed from where officers held him.
“Ask Margaret.”
Alexander turned.
Margaret Ellis had gone pale.
“Margaret.”
She looked at the floor.
“You knew.”
“I knew part of it.”
“Tell me.”
The auditorium had been cleared.
Only investigators, attorneys, security, Maria, Emily, and several senior directors remained.
Margaret sat.
“Your father was diagnosed with early neurological disease shortly before his death.”
Alexander frowned.
“He died of a heart attack.”
“He did.”
“But he was sick before that?”
“Yes.”
Alexander felt betrayed all over again.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
“He forbade it.”
Margaret continued.
“Edward feared the board would remove him if his condition became public.”
Thomas laughed bitterly.
“So he created the emergency incapacity rules himself.”
Alexander looked at Thomas.
“You used my father’s rules against me.”
“I improved them.”
Elliot interrupted.
“Edward didn’t trust either of us.”
Alexander stared at his uncle.
“What did he do?”
Margaret answered.
“He created Northbridge.”
Silence.
Alexander could hardly process it.
“My father created the company that has been stealing from Bennett Global?”
“Originally, Northbridge wasn’t stealing.”
Margaret explained.
Edward had secretly moved portions of family wealth into a protected holding structure.
He feared hostile investors.
He wanted a hidden defensive voting block.
Thomas managed the structure.
Elliot knew about it.
After Edward died, the arrangement should have been disclosed to Alexander.
It never was.
Thomas and Elliot seized it instead.
Michael Carter discovered the money flows years later.
“So Michael was right,” Maria whispered.
Margaret nodded.
“He found the theft.”
Maria’s eyes filled.
“And they killed him.”
Thomas shook his head.
“No.”
Everyone looked at him.
“I didn’t kill Carter.”
Elliot smiled.
“Coward.”
Thomas glared.
“You ordered it.”
Police immediately focused on Elliot.
He said nothing.
Maria trembled.
Alexander stepped between her and Elliot.
“You had Michael killed?”
Elliot finally shrugged.
“He was going to expose thirty years of work.”
Maria slapped him.
No one stopped her.
“You took my husband.”
Emily stared at her mother, frightened.
Maria immediately knelt and pulled her close.
Alexander watched.
This was no longer about money.
It never had been.
It was about people who believed wealth excused everything.
Elliot looked toward Alexander.
“Your father started the game.”
“My father didn’t poison me.”
“No. He simply built a company where power mattered more than family.”
Alexander looked at the photograph again.
Perhaps there was truth in that.
Edward Bennett had been brilliant.
But cold.
Demanding.
Obsessed with control.
Alexander had spent his life believing success meant becoming like him.
Maybe that had been the mistake.
Police removed Elliot and Thomas.
The remaining investigation unfolded rapidly.
Vanessa agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration at sentencing.
She confessed that Thomas had recruited her nearly two years earlier.
Her assignment was simple.
Meet Alexander.
Gain his trust.
Marry him.
She claimed she had not initially known about the poisoning.
That changed after the engagement.
Hale began administering medication covertly.
Vanessa participated.
Her motive was money.
If Alexander were declared mentally incompetent after the marriage, Vanessa would receive control of several personal trusts.
Thomas would control Bennett Global.
Elliot would control Northbridge.
Everyone would win.
Except Alexander.
And anyone who learned too much.
Including Maria.
Including Emily.
Michael Carter’s evidence led investigators to offshore accounts and hidden assets worth more than four hundred million dollars.
Several board members resigned.
Two were arrested.
Dr. Hale lost his medical license while awaiting trial.
Vanessa’s engagement ring became police evidence.
For Alexander, the hardest part was not legal.
It was recovery.
Doctors told him the medication would gradually leave his system.
His memory should improve.
His strength would return.
But trust was more difficult to rebuild.
He became suspicious of every meal.
Every bottle.
Every person who entered a room.
One evening, Maria found him alone in the kitchen.
He was staring at a bowl of soup.
She understood immediately.
“You don’t have to eat it.”
Alexander laughed quietly.
“That’s the problem.”
Emily entered.
She saw the bowl.
Then Alexander.
She walked toward him.
Without saying anything, she took a clean spoon.
She tasted the soup.
Maria smiled.
Alexander stared.
Emily gave him an exaggerated thumbs-up.
He laughed.
It was the first genuine laugh he had produced in weeks.
“No,” he signed. “You don’t have to test my food.”
Emily signed back.
GOOD SOUP.
Alexander took a bite.
It was.
In the weeks that followed, something unexpected happened.
Maria planned to resign.
Alexander refused to accept the resignation.
“You’re not staying as a maid.”
Maria looked confused.
“What?”
He showed her a folder.
Inside was an offer.
Director of Employee Ethics and Protection.
Maria stared at it.
“I clean houses.”
“You spent three years quietly investigating a conspiracy that half my executives missed.”
“I didn’t investigate.”
“You found the evidence.”
“My husband found it.”
“And you protected it.”
Maria shook her head.
“I’m not qualified.”
“Neither were half the people who tried to steal the company.”
She laughed despite herself.
Alexander smiled.
“You know what vulnerable workers see because you were one. I need someone who will listen when people at the bottom of the organization say something is wrong.”
Maria looked at the contract.
Then at him.
“I want training.”
“Done.”
“And I won’t be decorative.”
“I wouldn’t dare.”
She accepted.
Alexander also created a foundation in Michael Carter’s name.
It funded legal protection for corporate whistleblowers and education for children with hearing disabilities.
But when he told Emily, she was unimpressed.
She signed only one question.
RABBIT?
Alexander frowned.
“What about Rabbit?”
Emily pointed at the stuffed toy.
Alexander finally understood.
The seam beneath the ear had never been repaired.
He laughed.
The next morning, he took the rabbit personally to an elderly tailor near the estate.
When it returned, the ear sat perfectly again.
Emily hugged it tightly.
Then hugged Alexander.
He froze.
For years after Claire’s death, he had avoided affection that felt too close.
Too dangerous.
Too capable of being lost.
But this time he hugged the child back.
That evening, Margaret arrived with news.
“The criminal case is strong.”
“Against all of them?”
“Thomas, Elliot, Hale, Vanessa, and two directors.”
“And Michael?”
She nodded.
“Prosecutors believe they can prove Elliot ordered the tampering that caused his accident.”
Maria wept when she heard.
Not because grief disappeared.
It never would.
But because her husband’s name would finally be cleared.
Alexander believed the nightmare was ending.
Then Daniel entered carrying an envelope.
“No return address.”
Inside was a handwritten note.
Alexander read it.
YOU FOUND THE PEOPLE WHO POISONED YOU.
BUT YOU STILL HAVEN’T FOUND WHO HELPED THEM FROM INSIDE YOUR HOME.
Alexander looked up.
Daniel’s face was grim.
Patrick had admitted taking money.
But Patrick had not known about the poison until later.
Someone else had provided schedules.
Food routines.
Security weaknesses.
Medical information.
Someone who had remained in the mansion through the entire investigation.
Alexander stared toward the hallway.
One final conspirator was still close.
Very close.
Then he noticed something written at the bottom of the note.
A time.
10:00 P.M.
And three words.
ASK THE GIRL.
Alexander’s blood turned cold.
He looked toward the room where Emily was playing.
Once again, the little girl knew something everyone else had missed.
May you like
And this time, the final secret was hiding inside Alexander’s own family home.
