Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Trap

At eleven fifty-three, Alexander walked into the Bennett Global boardroom.

The room became silent.

Sixteen directors sat around a glass table overlooking downtown.

Some looked shocked to see him.

Others looked uncomfortable.

Thomas Reed’s chair was empty.

Alexander noticed immediately.

“He called the meeting,” Alexander said. “Where is he?”

Nobody answered.

Margaret placed a folder on the table.

“We are requesting an immediate suspension of this proceeding.”

Director Samuel Grant frowned.

“On what basis?”

“Fraud.”

A murmur spread around the room.

Alexander remained standing.

“For months, I have experienced cognitive problems. You’ve all seen them.”

Several directors shifted uncomfortably.

“I believed they were caused by stress.”

He placed the laboratory report on the table.

“They weren’t.”

Margaret distributed copies.

“Last night, independent testing found controlled medication in Mr. Bennett’s food.”

The room erupted.

One director stood.

“Medication?”

Another asked, “How?”

Alexander raised his hand.

“My fiancée and my personal physician have been arrested.”

Shock moved through the room.

Then Samuel Grant spoke.

“This is extraordinary, but the medical declaration remains legally valid until challenged.”

Margaret looked at him.

“Signed by the physician currently under investigation for poisoning the patient?”

Samuel hesitated.

Another director leaned forward.

“There are two physician signatures.”

Margaret nodded.

“The second doctor is missing.”

That caused another wave of whispers.

Alexander watched faces.

Some people looked genuinely stunned.

Others did not.

He needed to know which was which.

“What exactly are we voting on?” he asked.

Samuel opened a document.

“Temporary transfer of executive authority pending neurological evaluation.”

“To whom?”

A pause.

“Vice Chairman Reed.”

Alexander smiled coldly.

“Convenient.”

The boardroom doors opened.

Daniel entered.

Behind him came two police detectives.

“We have evidence linking Thomas Reed to the poisoning conspiracy,” Daniel announced.

Now everyone was talking at once.

Alexander turned toward the wall screen.

“Play it.”

Security footage appeared.

Thomas Reed and Dr. Hale sat together in the car.

The room watched.

There was no audio.

Samuel frowned.

“This proves they met.”

“Nothing more.”

Alexander nodded.

“You’re right.”

He looked toward the door.

Maria entered.

Emily held her hand.

The board members looked confused.

Alexander crouched beside Emily briefly.

“You sure?”

She nodded.

The footage replayed.

Emily signed.

Alexander translated.

“The board won’t remove him without evidence.”

Silence.

“Then we give them evidence.”

A director whispered, “My God.”

“How long until the symptoms become obvious?”

Three months.

The screen stopped.

Samuel leaned backward.

Nobody spoke.

Alexander looked around the table.

“Every mistake you saw me make was real.”

That surprised them.

“I did forget meetings. I did sign documents incorrectly. I did lose track of conversations.”

He swallowed.

“Because I was being drugged.”

His voice remained steady.

“And people I trusted used those symptoms to convince you I was incapable.”

One older director removed his glasses.

“Alexander…”

“No.”

Alexander shook his head.

“I’m not asking for sympathy. I’m asking you to look at the evidence.”

Margaret passed around financial records linking Patrick Sloan to shell companies.

Another document showed Vanessa’s secret payments.

Then came copies of Dr. Hale’s falsified reports.

The emergency motion began collapsing.

But just as Alexander believed the worst was over, the boardroom screen suddenly changed.

A remote participant had joined the meeting.

Thomas Reed.

His face appeared from an unknown location.

“Alexander.”

Several directors shouted at once.

Daniel immediately began tracing the connection.

Alexander stepped toward the screen.

“You poisoned me.”

Thomas smiled faintly.

“No. Vanessa poisoned you.”

“You planned it.”

“Careful.”

Thomas leaned toward his camera.

“Accusations are not evidence.”

Alexander gestured toward the footage.

Thomas laughed.

“A deaf child interpreting silent video?”

Emily stared at him.

Thomas continued.

“Do you understand how absurd this will sound in court?”

Alexander felt anger flare.

Then Thomas said something unexpected.

“I warned you years ago.”

Alexander frowned.

“About what?”

“Your weakness.”

Thomas’s smile vanished.

“Your father built Bennett Global. I helped him build it. Then you inherited everything because of your last name.”

Alexander stared.

Thomas continued.

“I spent thirty years making that company what it is.”

“And you decided to steal it.”

“I decided to save it.”

“You drugged me.”

“I created an opportunity.”

Alexander’s jaw tightened.

“Why Vanessa?”

“Because lonely men make predictable decisions.”

That sentence struck harder than Alexander expected.

Thomas knew exactly where to hurt him.

Claire.

His grief.

His years of isolation after her death.

Vanessa had not simply appeared.

She had been placed in his life.

Chosen.

Coached.

Designed to become indispensable.

Alexander looked at the screen.

“You used my wife’s death against me.”

Thomas smiled.

“I used your inability to recover from it.”

Daniel murmured, “We almost have the location.”

Thomas seemed to hear something off-screen.

Then he leaned closer.

“You should be more concerned about the woman standing behind the child.”

Alexander turned.

Maria?

She stared at Thomas’s image.

“What are you talking about?”

Thomas continued.

“Ask your maid why she really came to work for you.”

Maria went white.

Alexander looked at her.

“What does he mean?”

Thomas disconnected.

The screen went black.

Daniel cursed.

“Lost him.”

The board meeting was immediately suspended.

Police opened a formal investigation into Thomas Reed.

But Alexander’s attention remained on Maria.

She stood beside Emily, trembling.

“Tell me.”

Maria looked down.

“I wanted to.”

“Tell me now.”

She took a deep breath.

“My husband worked for Bennett Global.”

Alexander frowned.

“What was his name?”

“Michael Carter.”

Alexander recognized it.

Not immediately.

Then suddenly.

Michael Carter.

Financial compliance officer.

Dead three years earlier in a highway accident.

Alexander’s expression changed.

“He worked in internal audit.”

Maria nodded.

“He believed someone inside the company was stealing money.”

Margaret stared at her.

“Thomas?”

“I don’t know.”

Maria’s eyes filled with tears.

“Michael said he had found unusual payments through offshore companies. He was afraid. Two days before he was supposed to meet with your father’s former attorney, he died.”

Alexander felt cold.

“The accident.”

“The police called it an accident.”

Maria looked at Emily.

“But Michael didn’t believe in coincidences.”

Alexander waited.

“He left documents.”

“Where?”

“I hid them.”

“For three years?”

“I was scared.”

“Then why come work here?”

Maria looked directly at him.

“Because I wanted to know who killed my husband.”

Silence filled the boardroom.

Emily stared at her mother.

She could not hear the confession.

But she saw Maria crying.

She held her mother’s hand.

Alexander felt the conspiracy expanding again.

It had not begun months earlier.

It had begun years earlier.

Possibly before Claire had even died.

“What did Michael find?” Alexander asked.

Maria wiped her eyes.

“A company called Northbridge Holdings.”

Margaret froze.

Alexander saw it.

“What?”

Margaret slowly sat.

“Northbridge Holdings owns eleven percent of Bennett Global through subsidiaries.”

Alexander stared at her.

“Who controls it?”

“We don’t know.”

Maria shook her head.

“My husband believed Thomas did.”

Alexander looked toward Daniel.

“Find the documents.”

Maria whispered, “They aren’t at my house.”

“Where?”

She looked at Emily.

“My husband hid them somewhere only she would remember.”

Emily blinked as everyone turned toward her.

Maria knelt and signed something.

The girl’s face changed.

Then she pointed toward her stuffed rabbit.

Alexander stared.

Maria carefully took the toy.

She opened a tiny stitched seam beneath one floppy ear.

Inside was a small metal key.

Emily had carried it for three years without knowing what it opened.

Maria held it up.

“My husband said if anything happened to him, this key would expose everything.”

Alexander stared at the tiny object.

Somewhere in the city was a lock that contained the truth about Michael Carter’s death, Thomas Reed’s fortune, and perhaps the entire conspiracy against Bennett Global.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He listened.

His face hardened.

“They found Thomas.”

Alexander stood.

“Where?”

Daniel looked at Maria.

“At your house.”

The room went silent.

“And he’s looking for something.”

Maria clutched the key.

Alexander understood immediately.

Thomas knew about Michael’s evidence.

And after three years of waiting, he had finally come to destroy it.

May you like

But Thomas did not know that the one thing he desperately needed had been hanging from a little girl’s stuffed rabbit all along.
