Chapter 10 - Betrayal Beneath the Cathedral

Marco looked terrified.
Not dangerous.
Terrified.
Elena knew the difference.
“Marco.”
His eyes found hers.
“I'm sorry.”
Luca moved slightly in front of her.
Marco noticed.
“I didn't come to hurt anyone.”
“Then put the card down,” Luca said.
Marco obeyed immediately.
The plastic card hit the marble floor.
Dario appeared at the opposite end of the corridor with two security men.
“Hands where I can see them.”
Marco raised them.
Elena stepped around Luca.
“What did Santi make you do?”
Marco's face crumpled.
“My sister.”
Again.
Elena's anger collided with sympathy.
“Where is she?”
“I don't know.”
“What does he want?”
“The ledger.”
Luca said, “He doesn't know we have two parts.”
“Yes, he does.”
Silence.
Marco looked at Elena.
“He knows about Paolo.”
“How?”
“I told him.”
Elena closed her eyes.
Marco continued quickly.
“I didn't know Paolo was alive until Santi told me.”
“Why access the flight plan?”
“He wanted you to go to Istanbul.”
Luca frowned.
“Why?”
“Because the gallery is empty.”
Elena looked at him.
“What?”
Marco swallowed.
“Santi searched it months ago.”
Luca's jaw tightened.
“He found the ledger?”
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“Because he's still looking.”
Santi's voice returned through the speakers.
“Marco.”
Marco flinched.
“You've always talked too much.”
The emergency lights flickered.
Then everything went silent.
Luca looked toward Dario.
“Kill the external connection.”
“Working on it.”
Marco lowered his hands.
“There's another reason he wanted Istanbul.”
“What?” Elena asked.
“To get you away from Milan.”
“Why?”
Marco looked at Luca.
“Because tomorrow night he is holding another auction beneath Palazzo Nero.”
Luca stared.
“There is no auction tomorrow.”
“Santi arranged it.”
“In my building?”
“Not your building.”
“What does that mean?”
Marco took a shaky breath.
“The property deed changed three days ago.”
Luca's expression became dangerous.
“To whom?”
“Cem Heritage Foundation.”
Adrian Cem.
Luca's maternal uncle.
Elena remembered the stolen credentials.
“Adrian owns Palazzo Nero now?”
Marco nodded.
“He transferred it.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
Luca called Adrian.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
By sunrise, Dario had confirmed the impossible.
The underground ballroom property had legally transferred to a foundation controlled by Adrian Cem.
The paperwork bore Luca's electronic authorization.
Forged.
Somebody had been preparing this for months.
Marco remained under guard.
Elena refused to let Luca punish him.
“He helped them.”
“He was coerced.”
“He still helped them.”
“And he told us.”
Luca looked at her.
“You defend people too easily.”
“And you condemn them too quickly.”
“Sometimes condemnation keeps people alive.”
“And sometimes mercy does.”
They stared.
Then Luca exhaled.
“Fine.”
“Fine?”
“He remains here until we know where his sister is.”
Marco looked relieved.
“Thank you.”
Luca said, “Thank Elena.”
Elena gave Luca a small smile.
Progress again.
They spent the day tracing Adrian.
He had disappeared.
His last known location was Palazzo Nero.
At dusk, an invitation arrived.
Delivered by courier.
Black envelope.
Silver lettering.
ONE FINAL AUCTION.
Inside was a card.
MIDNIGHT.
PALAZZO NERO.
BRING GIOVANNI'S LEDGER.
COME WITH ELENA.
OR MARCO'S SISTER DIES.
Elena read it twice.
“No.”
Luca took the card.
“No what?”
“No pretending I won't go.”
“I wasn't going to.”
She looked surprised.
He raised an eyebrow.
“I told you I'm learning.”
“I'm impressed.”
“Don't be. I intend to surround the building.”
“That sounds more familiar.”
Dario prepared the team.
Elena changed into the same black service dress she had worn the first night.
Luca found her in the foyer.
“No.”
She looked down.
“What?”
“That dress.”
“There's nothing wrong with it.”
“I associate it with Renato touching you.”
Elena stared.
“Are you jealous of a dress now?”
“I dislike the memory.”
“That sounds suspiciously emotional.”
“It is.”
She smiled.
“Good.”
Luca wore a black suit.
No tie.
The same quiet danger he had carried the first night.
But Elena saw more now.
Grief.
Fear.
Responsibility.
They drove toward the cathedral district.
“Whatever happens,” Luca said, “stay near me.”
“I'll stay near you because I choose to.”
He nodded.
“Acceptable.”
“Elena.”
“Yes?”
“If something goes wrong—”
“It will.”
“That wasn't helpful.”
“I prefer realistic optimism.”
He took her hand.
She let him.
Palazzo Nero looked unchanged.
Elegant entrance.
Private security.
Black cars.
Guests.
But inside, the atmosphere was different.
No quartet.
No laughter.
Only whispered conversations.
The ballroom beneath Milan was filled with collectors again.
Santi stood on the auction platform.
Beside him sat a woman.
Hands tied.
Marco's sister.
Elena's stomach tightened.
Adrian Cem stood beside Santi.
Luca stopped.
His face revealed nothing.
Adrian was elegant.
Late sixties.
Thin.
Silver hair.
He looked at Luca almost affectionately.
“My sister's son.”
Luca's voice was ice.
“Uncle.”
Elena realized something.
Adrian wasn't frightened of Luca.
Not even slightly.
Santi smiled.
“Welcome home.”
“This isn't my home.”
“Not anymore.”
Luca's eyes went to Marco's sister.
“Release her.”
“After the ledger.”
Elena stepped forward.
“We brought it.”
Santi looked at her.
“Giovanni's daughter.”
“Vittorio.”
He laughed softly.
“You have your father's courage.”
“I've been told.”
“And his habit of trusting the wrong Demir.”
Luca stiffened.
Adrian smiled.
“You still don't understand, do you?”
Luca looked at him.
“Understand what?”
Adrian walked down from the stage.
“Your mother did not discover the conspiracy.”
He stopped in front of Luca.
“She created it.”
Silence.
Luca's face changed.
“No.”
Adrian's smile became sad.
“My sister was far more complicated than the saint you made her into.”
Elena remembered Leyla's tape.
The warning.
The ledger.
“What are you talking about?” she asked.
Adrian looked at her.
“Leyla created the debt network.”
Luca stepped forward.
“Liar.”
“Ask the ledger.”
Adrian pointed toward the black notebook Elena carried.
“Look at the initials.”
Elena's mind returned to them.
LC.
Leyla Cem.
Repeated again and again.
More often than Santi.
More often than Yusuf.
She looked at Luca.
He was pale.
Santi smiled.
“Your mother wasn't trying to expose us, Luca.”
He lifted a champagne glass.
“She was trying to escape us after realizing what she had built.”
Adrian added quietly, “And Giovanni Rossi helped her.”
Elena's heart dropped.
“What?”
“Your father did not simply discover the network.”
Adrian's eyes settled on her.
“He designed the accounting system that made it possible.”
The room tilted.
Everything Elena believed had just broken again.
Then Santi reached beneath the podium.
He placed a third ledger on the table.
The missing section.
Yusuf's part.
“Tonight,” Santi said, “we are finally going to put the past together.”
And Elena realized the auction had never been about art.
They were the items being sold.
Their secrets.
Their families.
Their futures.
May you like
And everyone in the room had come to watch.
