Chapter 18 - Her Choice

Three months after Palazzo Nero collapsed, Elena stood outside the University of Milan holding an acceptance letter.
She read it four times.
Then once more because she still didn't believe it.
Law program.
Partial scholarship.
Deferred tuition support.
She had been accepted.
“You're smiling.”
Elena turned.
Luca stood several feet away holding two coffees.
He wore a dark coat instead of a suit.
No security immediately visible.
Though Elena knew Dario was probably somewhere nearby pretending not to watch.
“I got in.”
Luca smiled.
A real smile.
One she saw more often now.
“I knew you would.”
“You did not.”
“I did.”
“I almost failed mathematics in secondary school.”
“You're studying law.”
“Details.”
He handed her coffee.
“Congratulations.”
Elena looked at him.
“That's all?”
“What else?”
“No dramatic declaration?”
“No.”
“No fireworks?”
“Not today.”
“No terrified waiter carrying roses?”
Luca looked offended.
“That happened once.”
“You scared that poor man.”
“He dropped the flowers.”
“Because you appeared behind him.”
“He lacked discipline.”
Elena laughed.
Life had become strangely ordinary.
Not completely.
Luca still attended legal hearings.
Investigators were still dismantling pieces of the old network.
Kemal had pleaded guilty to multiple charges.
Santi was preparing for trial.
Adrian had confessed to arranging the attack that killed Giovanni.
Marco's sister was safe.
Marco himself was cooperating with investigators and working somewhere far away from luxury parties.
Paolo had entered witness protection.
He occasionally sent Elena postcards without return addresses.
The most recent contained three words.
YOUR FATHER TRIED.
Elena kept it inside her wallet.
Bellarosa no longer collected debts.
Sofia's team had invalidated thousands of contracts.
Properties were being returned.
Families received letters telling them they owed nothing.
Elena volunteered at the legal foundation processing claims.
Sometimes people cried.
Sometimes Elena did too.
Luca sold most of his inherited art collection.
Several pieces were returned without compensation.
The press gradually stopped calling him the Shadow King.
Now they called him controversial.
Luca considered that progress.
They walked through the university courtyard.
Students hurried past.
Nobody recognized Elena.
Several recognized Luca.
He hated it.
She enjoyed watching him pretend not to.
“Where are you going?” she asked.
“Meeting.”
“With?”
“Museum directors.”
Elena grinned.
“The former black-market art dealer restitution consultant.”
“I'm leaving.”
She caught his hand.
He stopped.
“Stay.”
He looked at her.
“Five minutes.”
They sat beneath a tree.
Autumn leaves covered the path.
Luca drank coffee.
Elena leaned against his shoulder.
“Remember when you tried ordering me out of Palazzo Nero?”
“Yes.”
“You were terrible.”
“I saved you from Renato.”
“You did.”
“You're welcome.”
“You then announced I belonged to you.”
“I have apologized.”
“Not enough.”
He sighed.
“Elena.”
“I enjoy hearing it.”
“I noticed.”
She looked at him.
“Do you ever miss who you were?”
He considered carefully.
“I miss certainty.”
“What do you mean?”
“When people feared me, I rarely questioned whether they would obey.”
“And now?”
“Now I ask.”
“That sounds exhausting.”
“It is.”
She smiled.
“Worth it?”
Luca looked at her.
“Yes.”
A student walked past and glanced at him.
Then at Elena.
“Is that Luca Demir?” she whispered to her friend.
Elena whispered back loudly, “No.”
Luca stared at her.
The students hurried away.
“You enjoyed that.”
“Very much.”
That evening Elena returned to her apartment.
Her own apartment.
Not Luca's.
They had made a deliberate decision after the investigations.
No rushing.
No dependence.
No replacing one kind of security with another.
Elena wanted to know she chose Luca because she loved him.
Not because she needed protection.
Luca hated the apartment's locks.
He upgraded them after asking permission.
Progress.
At eight, Elena's doorbell rang.
She opened it.
Matteo Rinaldi stood outside.
She blinked.
“Matteo?”
He smiled.
“Surprised?”
“A little.”
“I need legal help.”
“I haven't started school.”
“I know. It's for your foundation.”
He handed her documents.
“My family owns a building Bellarosa seized.”
Elena's expression changed.
“Oh.”
“I don't want it back.”
“What?”
“I want the tenants to own it.”
She smiled.
“That may be complicated.”
“Apparently you enjoy complicated.”
“Who told you?”
He looked past her.
Luca stood at the end of the hallway.
Carrying dinner.
Matteo's smile became nervous.
“Elena.”
“Yes?”
“I suddenly remember somewhere else I need to be.”
She laughed.
“Luca isn't going to kill you.”
“I prefer not to test that theory.”
Luca approached.
“Rinaldi.”
“Demir.”
Matteo handed Elena the papers.
“Call me.”
Luca stopped.
Matteo immediately added, “Professionally.”
Elena covered her mouth to hide a laugh.
Matteo left.
Luca entered.
“You enjoy making him uncomfortable.”
“Immensely.”
“Jealous?”
“No.”
“That sounded very fast.”
Luca set down the food.
“I learned jealousy is irrational.”
“And irritation?”
“Equally irrational.”
Elena smiled.
He remembered.
They ate pasta in her tiny kitchen.
No servants.
No crystal chandeliers.
No underground ballroom.
Elena loved it.
After dinner Luca helped wash dishes.
Poorly.
“You own companies.”
“Fewer now.”
“You negotiate with governments.”
“Yes.”
“You cannot properly wash a frying pan.”
“I delegate.”
“Not here.”
He looked at the pan.
“This relationship contains unreasonable expectations.”
“This relationship?”
He paused.
Elena looked at him.
Three months earlier, she had nearly used the word love beside his pool.
Neither had forgotten.
Luca dried his hands.
“Elena.”
“Yes?”
“I need to ask you something.”
Her heartbeat changed.
“Okay.”
He did not kneel.
No ring.
Good.
She wasn't ready for that.
Instead he took a key from his pocket.
Small.
Silver.
Elena looked at it.
“What is that?”
“My new house.”
“You bought one?”
“Two bedrooms.”
She smiled.
“Garden?”
“Yes.”
“Basil?”
“Eventually.”
She looked at the key.
Luca continued.
“I am not asking you to move in.”
“Good.”
“I knew you'd say that.”
“What are you asking?”
He placed the key in her palm.
“I want you to have access.”
“Why?”
“Because I want there to be one place in my life where you never need permission to enter.”
Elena stared at him.
The symbolism hit harder than a ring would have.
The man who once controlled doors, rooms, people, and information was giving her a key.
Not asking her to stay.
Giving her freedom to come and go.
Tears filled her eyes.
Luca looked alarmed.
“That was not supposed to make you cry.”
“Shut up.”
He smiled.
Elena closed her fingers around the key.
“I love you.”
There.
Finally.
Simple.
No audience.
No fireworks.
Luca went completely still.
She laughed through tears.
“You look terrified.”
“I am.”
“Why?”
“Say it again.”
“I love you.”
He touched her face.
“I love you too.”
The words sounded unfamiliar in his voice.
Perhaps because he had not said them often.
Perhaps because he had spent most of his life believing love created weakness.
Elena kissed him.
When they separated, Luca rested his forehead against hers.
“Move in eventually?”
“Maybe.”
“Next year?”
“Don't ruin the moment.”
“Six months?”
“Luca.”
“I'm negotiating.”
She laughed.
Then her phone buzzed.
A message from Sofia.
FINAL BELLAROSA DISSOLUTION APPROVED.
Elena stared.
Luca read it.
“It is finished.”
She sat down.
For years, Elena had imagined freedom as a huge feeling.
Triumphant.
Explosive.
Instead it arrived quietly.
A message on a phone.
A key in her palm.
A man washing dishes badly in her kitchen.
“No more debt,” she whispered.
“No.”
“No more threats.”
“No.”
She looked at Luca.
“No more belonging to anyone.”
His expression softened.
“Never.”
Elena smiled.
“Good.”
Outside, somewhere across Milan, bells began ringing.
And for the first time since she was seventeen, Elena Rossi had nothing chasing her.
Only a future waiting ahead.
May you like
One she would choose for herself.
