Chapter 15 - The Final Auction

Luca wanted Elena moved out of Milan.

She refused.

They compromised.

Which in practice meant Luca moved half his security team into a private hotel suite and complained every ten minutes.

“You are pacing.”

“I know.”

“You've crossed that carpet twenty-three times.”

“I know.”

“You're making me nervous.”

Luca stopped.

“Good.”

Elena threw a pillow at him.

He caught it.

“Violence.”

“You survived.”

“Barely.”

Dario looked up from his laptop.

“I hate both of you.”

Elena smiled.

“Progress. He used to only hate me.”

Dario's mouth twitched.

Then his screen changed.

“Found something.”

Luca moved immediately.

“What?”

“Kemal used one of Adrian's old bank accounts.”

“Where?”

“To pay for storage access.”

“What storage?”

Dario enlarged a map.

“Warehouse district east of Milan.”

Elena looked at it.

“Why would he need a warehouse?”

Luca and Dario exchanged a glance.

“The auction inventory,” Luca said.

“What?”

“Palazzo Nero's final auction was supposed to include several major pieces.”

“Stolen?”

“Yes.”

“So when investigators entered, the pieces weren't there.”

“No.”

“Kemal moved them.”

“Probably.”

Elena understood.

“He still has leverage.”

“Hundreds of millions worth.”

“Can we track buyers?”

Dario shook his head.

“Unless he contacts them.”

Elena remembered something.

“The invitations.”

Luca looked at her.

“What?”

“Santi's auction invitation had a code.”

“Most do.”

“I kept mine.”

She searched her bag.

Produced the black card.

Luca stared.

“You keep evidence in your handbag?”

“I also have gum.”

“Remarkable.”

The invitation contained a tiny QR symbol beneath the embossed lettering.

Dario scanned it.

A hidden website opened.

Password.

Elena looked at Luca.

“Olives?”

He almost smiled.

“Try it.”

Wrong.

Dario examined the code.

“There is metadata.”

Within minutes he found a route to a private server.

Then a message appeared.

FINAL AUCTION.

TONIGHT.

MIDNIGHT.

Dario looked at Luca.

“Kemal is selling the missing inventory.”

“Where?”

The coordinates loaded.

Warehouse district.

Elena folded her arms.

“Well.”

Luca sighed.

“No.”

“You promised.”

“I promised to learn, not become suicidal.”

“You aren't going alone.”

“Correct. Dario is coming.”

Dario raised a hand.

“Please don't involve me.”

Elena looked at Luca.

“This entire nightmare started because wealthy men believed the rest of us were pieces on a board.”

“Elena.”

“I will not become a piece again.”

He stared at her.

She continued.

“I don't need to stand beside you during a gunfight.”

“There will not be a gunfight.”

“Wonderful. Then I can come.”

“Your logic is criminal.”

“You would know.”

Dario covered a laugh with a cough.

Luca glared at him.

Dario immediately became interested in the laptop.

Eventually Luca agreed under conditions.

Elena remained with investigators in a surveillance vehicle.

She did not enter the warehouse.

She accepted.

That was also progress.

At eleven thirty, the district looked abandoned.

Old industrial buildings.

Freight yards.

Rail lines.

Rain.

Inside one warehouse, lights glowed.

Luxury cars arrived.

Buyers entered.

Kemal was rebuilding the auction.

Luca wore a concealed microphone.

Elena listened from the van.

His voice came through clearly.

“Inside.”

Dario answered.

“Visual?”

“Twenty-two guards.”

Elena's stomach tightened.

An investigator beside her monitored feeds.

The plan was simple.

Record the illegal sales.

Confirm Kemal controlled the inventory.

Move when enough evidence existed.

Nobody wanted violence.

At midnight, Kemal appeared on stage.

“Ladies and gentlemen.”

Elena watched through a camera.

Kemal looked composed.

As if he had not escaped custody twelve hours earlier.

“Tonight we offer something beyond art.”

Behind him stood paintings.

Sculptures.

Artifacts.

Objects stolen from generations.

“Tonight we offer freedom from history.”

Elena rolled her eyes.

“Criminals really love speeches.”

The investigator almost smiled.

Then Kemal continued.

“Our first lot is not an object.”

Luca's voice came through Elena's earpiece.

“What?”

Curtains opened.

A man sat tied to a chair.

Paolo.

Elena's heart dropped.

Kemal smiled.

“Paolo Conti.”

Luca's voice sharpened.

“Hold.”

Investigators waited.

Kemal continued.

“Mr. Conti possesses information many of you would prefer forgotten.”

The buyers shifted.

“He also knows where the complete ledger has been copied.”

Paolo looked exhausted but alive.

Kemal walked around him.

“Tonight you are not bidding to own him.”

He smiled.

“You are bidding for silence.”

Elena whispered, “Move.”

The commander shook his head.

“Not yet.”

“What do you mean?”

“We need confirmation of financial participation.”

“He is selling a human being.”

“We move too early, buyers walk.”

“I don't care about buyers.”

Luca's voice came through.

“Elena.”

She froze.

He could hear her.

“Trust me.”

She hated those words.

Still, she sat.

Bidding began.

One million.

Two.

Five.

Elena felt sick.

Then Luca walked into view.

No disguise.

No weapon visible.

Every head turned.

Kemal smiled.

“My nephew.”

The buyers panicked.

Luca continued toward the stage.

“I'll bid.”

Kemal laughed.

“With what?”

“Everything.”

Elena's breath caught.

Kemal looked amused.

“Be specific.”

“Demir Holdings.”

The warehouse went silent.

Dario whispered, “Luca, what are you doing?”

Luca ignored him.

Kemal's eyes widened.

“You're offering the company?”

“For Paolo.”

“Elena is making you sentimental.”

“No.”

Luca looked directly at his uncle.

“She made me understand value.”

Elena's chest tightened.

Kemal stepped closer.

“Then prove it.”

He produced a document.

“Sign.”

Luca looked at it.

The commander whispered, “We need more.”

Elena stared at the screen.

Something was wrong.

Kemal was too confident.

Then she saw it.

One guard near the side entrance was not watching Luca.

He was watching the surveillance cameras.

“Elena?” Dario whispered.

“What?”

“I see movement outside.”

Her screen flickered.

Then went black.

The investigator cursed.

“Signal jammer.”

Elena's earpiece filled with static.

“Luca?”

Nothing.

Every feed died.

The surveillance van door suddenly opened.

A man stood outside.

Not an investigator.

Elena reached for the alarm.

Too late.

He grabbed her arm.

She fought.

Another man appeared.

Then a familiar voice said, “Don't hurt her.”

Elena froze.

Marco stepped into view.

Her heart sank.

“Not again.”

His face looked miserable.

“I had no choice.”

Elena stared.

“Stop saying that.”

He looked down.

Behind him stood Kemal's men.

Marco whispered, “They have my sister again.”

Elena laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

One guard pushed her toward a waiting car.

Marco leaned close.

“Trust me.”

She almost screamed.

Instead, Elena saw something in his hand.

A tiny transmitter.

He had not betrayed them.

Not this time.

He was leading them somewhere.

Elena stopped fighting.

The men put her in the car.

Marco climbed beside her.

As they drove away, he whispered without moving his lips:

“Luca told me you would never cooperate.”

Elena stared forward.

“He knows me.”

Marco almost smiled.

“Apparently.”

“Where are we going?”

“Back to Palazzo Nero.”

“Why?”

Marco's face became serious.

“Because Kemal doesn't care about the auction.”

“What does he want?”

“You.”

Elena's blood went cold.

“Why?”

Marco looked at her.

“Because Bellarosa belongs to you.”

Of course.

The debts.

The properties.

The money.

Luca had offered Demir Holdings.

Kemal wanted something even more valuable.

The network itself.

May you like

And to take it, he needed Elena's signature.
