Chapter 13 - A Betrayal Inside the Warehouse

Victor requested a meeting.
Gabriel agreed.
Madison hated the idea.
“It's a trap.”
“Yes.”
“And you're going?”
“Yes.”
“You're impossible.”
“So I've been told.”
Victor arrived alone.
Seventy years old.
Elegant.
Calm.
He looked at Madison.
“So this is the girl.”
Madison disliked him immediately.
“My name is Madison.”
Victor smiled.
“I know.”
Gabriel stepped between them.
“Talk.”
Victor admitted helping Voss.
But claimed Voss had gone too far.
“The theft was supposed to be temporary.”
“Twelve million dollars?”
“Money moves.”
“People died.”
Victor looked away.
“Trevor wasn't my decision.”
“Madison?”
Victor's eyes moved toward her.
“No.”
Gabriel watched him carefully.
“Who ordered the railing?”
“Voss.”
Madison asked, “Why use my credentials?”
Victor sighed.
“Because you were perfect.”
The words chilled her.
“Low-level employee. No powerful family. No money for lawyers. Once the stolen inventory was discovered, the evidence would point to you.”
Gabriel's fists tightened.
Victor continued.
“Then you survived.”
Madison stared.
“Sorry to inconvenience you.”
Victor almost smiled.
“You're stronger than they expected.”
“No,” Madison said. “You just thought people without money were disposable.”
Victor's smile disappeared.
That hit him.
Before Gabriel could speak, Victor said, “Voss is leaving tonight.”
“Where?”
“Pier Thirty-One.”
“Why tell me?”
“Because he has something I need.”
“The ledger?”
Victor nodded.
Gabriel understood.
Victor wasn't helping.
He was cleaning up.
But Madison saw something else.
Victor kept touching his jacket pocket.
Recording device.
She stepped forward and hugged him.
Everyone froze.
Victor was too surprised to react.
Madison slipped the device from his pocket.
She stepped back and held it up.
“You mean this?”
Gabriel looked at his uncle.
Victor's expression finally cracked.
May you like
Madison smiled.
“You really should stop underestimating warehouse workers.”
