Chapter 15 - What Happened on Platform Seven

Madison stood alone beneath a warehouse light.
Voss faced her.
Older than she remembered.
More tired.
Less powerful.
That surprised her.
“You caused a great deal of trouble,” he said.
“You tried to kill me.”
“I told Trevor to frighten you.”
“You keep saying that like it matters.”
“It does to me.”
“Trevor is dead.”
Voss looked away.
“Victor handled Trevor.”
Madison's phone remained in her pocket.
Recording.
“What happened on Platform Seven?”
Voss sighed.
“You reported the inventory discrepancies.”
“So?”
“You were thorough.”
“That's my job.”
“Exactly.”
He almost sounded annoyed by it.
“You kept following numbers nobody else noticed.”
“So you sabotaged the railing.”
“I told Trevor to loosen one anchor. Enough to frighten you.”
“He loosened both.”
“Yes.”
“And I fell.”
“Yes.”
Madison's voice trembled.
“Sixteen feet.”
Voss finally looked ashamed.
“I know.”
“You watched me get blamed.”
“Yes.”
“You paid my doctor.”
“Yes.”
“You deleted my complaint.”
“Yes.”
Every confession transmitted to federal agents.
Madison took a breath.
“Why Trevor?”
“He wanted more money.”
“So Victor killed him?”
Voss hesitated.
That was the first question he didn't answer.
Madison understood.
“No.”
Voss looked at her.
“You killed Trevor.”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
Behind the warehouse, Gabriel heard it through the receiver.
The agents had enough.
They moved.
Voss saw shadows.
He grabbed Madison.
Gabriel appeared.
“Let her go.”
Voss pressed a knife near Madison's throat.
Gabriel stopped.
Madison's heart hammered.
But she remembered something.
Voss underestimated workers.
He always had.
Madison drove her heel onto his foot and twisted away.
Gabriel moved.
Agents flooded the warehouse.
Seconds later, Voss was on the ground.
Handcuffed.
Madison stood shaking.
Gabriel approached slowly.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“You're sure?”
“Yes.”
He pulled her into his arms.
For the first time, she didn't resist being protected.
She closed her eyes.
The nightmare that had begun on Platform Seven was almost over.
Almost.
May you like
Because Victor DeLorenzo had disappeared.
And he had taken the original ledger with him.
