Chapter 18 - Madison Finally Sits

Three months later, Center Seven looked different.

New lighting.

New cameras.

New safety systems.

Anonymous reporting channels.

Independent medical review.

Every structural complaint automatically copied to an external compliance database so no administrator could quietly delete it.

Madison had helped design the system.

Gabriel offered her a new position.

Director of Employee Safety and Inventory Integrity.

She stared at the title.

“You invented this.”

“Yes.”

“For me.”

“Yes.”

“That's favoritism.”

“Probably.”

She laughed.

“I'll take it.”

There was one condition.

Her office needed a standing desk.

Gabriel raised an eyebrow.

“Seriously?”

“Old habits.”

But there was also a chair.

Madison used it now.

Not always comfortably.

But she used it.

One evening, Gabriel entered her office carrying dinner.

“You're still here.”

“So are you.”

“I own the place.”

“That's your excuse for everything.”

He placed the food down.

Madison looked at him.

For months, something had existed between them.

Neither had named it.

Maybe because their beginning had been built from fear and danger.

Madison wanted whatever came next to begin differently.

“Gabriel.”

“Yes?”

“You know you can sit.”

He looked at the chair opposite her desk.

“Is that an invitation?”

“Don't make it weird.”

He sat.

Madison sat too.

They ate.

They talked about ordinary things.

Bad coffee.

Kelly's promotion.

A broken vending machine.

Gabriel's inability to understand why anyone liked bran cereal.

For nearly an hour, nobody mentioned Voss.

Nobody mentioned Victor.

Nobody mentioned the fall.

Eventually Gabriel looked at her.

“You're sitting.”

Madison smiled.

“So are you.”

He reached across the desk.

Not dramatically.

Simply offering his hand.

Madison looked at it.

Then placed hers in his.

There were no cameras.

No threats.

No secrets.

Just two people sitting across from each other.

For Madison, that was enough.

Almost.

May you like

Because the next morning, she would return to Platform Seven one final time.

And she had something she needed to leave there.
