Chapter 12 - The Video That Changed Everything

Almost a year after the divorce, an employee posted a video from our apprenticeship graduation.

I didn't know she was recording me.

Jasmine stood onstage holding her certificate.

She was crying.

I hugged her.

Someone asked her what the program meant.

“A chance,” she said. “Ms. Bennett looked at my work before she looked at my résumé.”

The video spread.

Not because of revenge.

Not because of a divorce.

Not because a wealthy family had fallen apart.

Millions of views accumulated around a simple moment of someone being given an opportunity.

The comments surprised me.

People shared stories about starting over at thirty.

Forty.

Fifty.

Sixty.

Women wrote about leaving marriages and rebuilding careers.

Men wrote about learning to separate loyalty from control.

Young designers asked how to apply.

Our next apprenticeship cycle received fourteen thousand applications.

I called Maya.

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“We need a bigger program.”

She laughed.

“That is a good problem.”

We created scholarships in Grandma Ruth's name.

The first Ruth Bennett Creative Scholarship funded twenty students.

I traveled to Kentucky for the announcement.

The ceremony took place on Grandma's porch.

The same porch in the photograph.

I stood exactly where she had stood.

Sunlight hit my face.

For one second, I could almost hear her.

Then my phone buzzed.

Claire.

I answered.

“Nora?”

“Yes?”

“Mom wants to donate.”

I blinked.

“To what?”

“The scholarship.”

“No.”

Claire laughed.

“I told her you'd say that.”

“If she wants to help students, she can donate anonymously to another program.”

“She said you'd say that too.”

Vivian was learning.

Slowly.

That evening, Grant sent a photograph.

He had attended a small-business workshop.

Behind him, a banner read:

BUILD SOMETHING YOU ACTUALLY OWN.

I smiled.

May you like

Then deleted nothing.

That was progress too.
