Chapter 16 - The House I Chose

Aaron and I eventually bought a house.
Not a mansion.
A warm modern home with enormous windows and a small garden.
Before moving in, he handed me something.
A small steel safe.
I stared at him.
“What is this?”
“Your grandmother's rule.”
I laughed.
“One lock I control?”
“Exactly.”
“What's the combination?”
“No idea.”
He handed me the manual.
“It's yours.”
I kissed him.
Inside, I placed Grandma Ruth's photograph.
Her blue ledger.
Her final letter.
And one restaurant napkin.
Not Grant's.
A new one.
On our first anniversary, Aaron had drawn a terrible sketch of our future house.
I had written beneath it:
May you like
Still better than Grant's logo.
Some memories didn't have to hurt forever.
