Chapter 15 - Daniel's Confession

On the drive home, Daniel became unusually quiet.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Daniel.”
He sighed.
“I've been thinking about Dad.”
I waited.
“I used to resent him.”
That surprised me.
“For dying?”
Daniel nodded.
“I know it's irrational.”
“Grief usually is.”
“I watched you struggle. Part of me blamed him for leaving us.”
I reached across the car and touched his arm.
“He didn't choose to.”
“I know.”
“But knowing and feeling aren't always the same thing.”
He nodded.
Then he said something that broke my heart.
“I built my whole life around making sure you never had to struggle again.”
Suddenly, I understood his anger at the resort differently.
It hadn't only been about Macy.
It had been about a boy who had watched his mother come home exhausted.
“You don't owe me either,” I said.
He looked at me.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“Mom—”
“I didn't raise you so you'd spend your adulthood paying me back.”
“But everything you sacrificed—”
“Was my choice.”
I squeezed his hand.
“You aren't my debt collector, Daniel.”
He laughed softly.
“That's basically what you told Macy.”
“Maybe all of us needed the lesson.”
That conversation freed something in him too.
He stopped trying to compensate me for my past.
Instead, we simply spent time together.
Coffee.
Walks.
Sunday dinners.
Love without accounting.
