Chapter 18 - The Last Gift

On my seventy-fifth birthday, Daniel handed me a small box.

“Please don't tell me you bought another vacation.”

“No.”

Inside was a photograph.

The first photograph he'd taken of me in the ocean.

I was standing ankle-deep in water, holding his hand.

Behind the photograph was another.

Macy and me seven years later.

Laughing in the same ocean.

Then another.

My solo trip.

Another.

The Someday Club.

Another.

My grandchildren.

Underneath them was the original postcard I'd kept on my refrigerator.

The empty beach.

On the back, Daniel had written years earlier:

One day, Mom.

Beneath it, he had added a new sentence.

I'm glad someday finally came.

I couldn't speak.

Daniel hugged me.

“You okay?”

“No.”

He laughed.

“Good no or bad no?”

“Very good no.”

Macy joined us.

The grandchildren piled in.

For a woman who once feared she needed to earn her place, I was surrounded by people who had learned that love wasn't a paycheck.

That evening, we went to the beach.

I sat beneath an umbrella.

Nobody needed me to carry anything.

Nobody needed me to prove anything.

I was simply Evelyn.

And that was enough.
