Chapter 17 - The Granddaughter Who Remembered

Sophie was thirteen when she asked me about the first vacation.
“Grandma?”
“Yes?”
“Do you remember when Mom made you watch us?”
I almost dropped my coffee.
“You remember that?”
“A little.”
She sat beside me.
“I remember thinking you looked sad.”
Children notice everything.
“Your mother and I worked it out.”
“I know.”
Sophie hesitated.
“Mom told me the whole story.”
I wasn't sure how I felt.
“She did?”
“She said she wanted me to know because she doesn't want me treating people that way.”
That changed everything.
Macy hadn't hidden her mistake.
She had turned it into a lesson.
Sophie continued.
“She said apologizing doesn't erase what you did. It means you take responsibility and change.”
I smiled.
“Your mother's right.”
Then Sophie asked:
“Are you proud of her?”
I looked toward the kitchen.
Macy was laughing with Daniel.
“Yes.”
“Even after what happened?”
“Especially because I know what happened.”
Sophie seemed confused.
“People aren't only the worst thing they've ever done.”
She thought about that.
Then nodded.
Years earlier, I had worried our family might break because I told the truth.

Instead, truth had rebuilt it stronger.
