Chapter 13 - Someone Inside Butler’s Empire

By morning, reporters surrounded Butler Holdings.
The board demanded Louis resign temporarily.
Investigators requested interviews.
Investors panicked.
Louis agreed to step aside.
Corrine didn’t.
“You’re surrendering.”
“I’m protecting the company.”
“From you?”
“From uncertainty.”
She followed him into his office.
“Did you order someone killed?”
“No.”
“Then say that.”
“It isn’t that simple.”
“It is to me.”
Louis stopped.
“The recording is edited.”
“Can you prove it?”
“The original existed.”
“Where?”
Louis looked at her.
“In my father’s archive.”
“Who has access?”
“Three people.”
One was dead.
One was Louis.
The third was his security chief, Marcus Hale.
Corrine’s stomach dropped.
Marcus had been beside them through everything.
He knew their movements.
Their plans.
The warehouse.
The penthouse.
The cemetery.
Louis immediately called him.
No answer.
They checked surveillance.
Marcus had left the building twenty minutes earlier.
Then Corrine noticed something on her desk.
A blue pen.
Not hers.
She opened it.
Inside was a tiny listening device.
Louis stared at it.
Every conversation.
Every plan.
Victor had known because someone had been listening from the beginning.
Corrine whispered, “Marcus?”
Louis’s phone buzzed.
A photograph appeared.
Marcus bound to a chair.
Alive.
Below it:
Wrong traitor.
Corrine and Louis looked at each other.
Someone else inside Butler Holdings was working for Victor.
Someone close enough to enter Corrine’s office.
May you like
Someone who knew she preferred blue pens.
And when Corrine looked through the glass walls at the employees beyond them, she realized the enemy had been watching her from only a few feet away.
