Chapter 14 - The Woman They Used as Bait

Corrine found the traitor.

Not Louis.

Not security.

Corrine.

She reviewed her calendar.

Every incident.

Every leaked movement.

Only one employee had requested schedule changes before each event.

Evelyn Price.

Vice president of corporate affairs.

Trusted for eleven years.

Louis stared at the evidence.

“Why?”

They soon learned.

Victor had been blackmailing Evelyn over her brother’s financial crimes.

Corrine wanted to confront her.

Louis objected.

Then remembered the rules.

“What do you want?”

“To give her a chance.”

They brought Evelyn into the office.

She denied everything.

Until Corrine placed the blue pen on the table.

Evelyn collapsed.

“He has my brother.”

Louis’s anger disappeared.

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“Can you contact Victor?”

“Yes.”

Corrine leaned forward.

“Then tell him I found the real evidence.”

Louis looked at her.

Again, bait.

Again, her choice.

Victor responded immediately.

He wanted Corrine.

Alone.

In exchange for Evelyn’s brother and Marcus.

Louis said no.

Corrine said yes.

They argued for twenty minutes.

Finally Corrine touched his face.

“Trust me.”

Louis closed his eyes.

That was harder than facing any enemy.

But he nodded.

Corrine went.

A tracking device was hidden in her shoe.

Another in her watch.

Victor’s men picked her up.

They removed the watch.

They missed the shoe.

Louis followed.

The vehicle stopped at an old waterfront mansion.

Corrine was taken inside.

Victor waited.

Older than she expected.

Elegant.

Calm.

“Mrs. Butler.”

Corrine sat opposite him.

“You know I’m not his wife.”

Victor smiled.

“Yes.”

“Then why keep calling me that?”

“Because Louis believes it now.”

Corrine’s heart stopped.

Victor leaned closer.

“The lie stopped being a lie for him long before it did for you.”

Before Corrine could answer, Victor placed Louis’s mother’s letter on the table.

May you like

“Would you like to know what else Louis never told you?”

And Corrine realized the most dangerous secret in the room might not belong to Victor at all.
