Chapter 7 - The Wife Who Wasn’t His Wife

Corrine refused to hide.
Louis expected the argument.
He didn’t expect her to win it.
“I’m not sitting in a safe house while everyone else decides what happens.”
“A bullet came through my window.”
“Your window.”
“It was aimed at us.”
“Then solve it.”
“I am trying.”
“By locking me away?”
Louis stopped.
She had found the one argument he could not answer.
Control.
He exhaled.
“What do you suggest?”
Corrine placed Victor’s photograph on the table.
“He wants the evidence.”
“Yes.”
“And he believes I can influence you.”
“Yes.”
“Then let him believe it.”
“No.”
“You keep saying that before I finish.”
“Because I know where this is going.”
“We give him something to chase.”
Louis stared at her.
“You want to become bait.”
“I want to stop being prey.”
Those words changed everything.
Louis sat down.
“Explain.”
Corrine did.
They would let Victor hear that she had discovered where Louis stored the evidence.
Not the real location.
A false one.
Victor would send someone.
They would follow that person back.
Louis hated the plan.
Which was precisely why he knew Victor might believe it.
“You’re frighteningly good at this,” he said.
“I organize your calendar. This is basically scheduling with criminals.”
Louis laughed.
Actually laughed.
Corrine stared at him.
“What?”
“I’ve never heard you laugh like that.”
His smile faded.
“You should.”
“Why don’t you?”
Louis looked away.
Because happiness had always felt temporary in his family.
But he didn’t say it.
Instead, they prepared the trap.
And three days later, Victor took the bait.
But the person who arrived at the false storage location wasn’t one of Victor’s men.
It was Dawson.
And when Corrine saw him through the surveillance feed, she understood something horrifying.
May you like
Dawson hadn’t accidentally stumbled into Victor’s world.
He had been working for him.
