Chapter 14 - A Trap Hidden Inside a Charity Dinner

Rachel entered the Cavalari house without fear.
Mara disliked that more than arrogance.
Fearlessness usually meant one of two things.
Ignorance.
Or leverage.
Rachel was not ignorant.
Dante remained standing.
“You have five minutes.”
Rachel sat.
“Your father used to give me ten.”
“My father made several errors.”
Rachel smiled.
“True.”
She placed the sealed folder on the desk.
Mara did not touch it.
“What is it?”
“Proof that Prague contains something Adrian hasn’t told you.”
Adrian folded his arms.
“Rachel.”
“You always did hate being interrupted.”
“You shot Thomas at a conference in Geneva.”
“He survived.”
“That’s your moral defense?”
“No. Merely a correction.”
Dante looked at Mara.
“Open it.”
Inside were photographs.
Northstar headquarters.
Adrian.
Alessandro.
Evelyn.
Thomas.
And one image that made Mara stop.
Herself.
Entering a restaurant in Prague.
Date:
Three days after the supposed office fire.
Mara frowned.
“This is fake.”
Rachel shook her head.
“I was in Budapest.”
“No.”
“I remember.”
“You remember waking in Budapest.”
Mara stared.
“What?”
Adrian became still.
“Rachel.”
There was warning in his voice.
Mara turned.
“What does she mean?”
Adrian did not answer.
Rachel did.
“You were injured during the evacuation.”
“No.”
“You fell in the stairwell.”
“I would remember.”
“You suffered a concussion.”
Mara looked at Adrian.
“Is that true?”
“Yes.”
The betrayal on her face was immediate.
“You never told me.”
“You recovered.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
Rachel continued.
“For forty-eight hours, you were with Northstar.”
Mara stared.
“That’s impossible.”
“No.”
“What happened?”
Rachel’s expression softened slightly.
“You discovered Thomas was the leak before anyone else.”
Mara looked toward Thomas’s signed document.
“No.”
“You confronted him.”
“I don’t remember.”
“Because someone gave you a sedative after the injury.”
“Who?”
Rachel looked at Adrian.
Mara turned.
Her brother’s face said everything.
“You?”
“I was trying to get you out.”
“You drugged me?”
“You were concussed and refusing to leave.”
“That is not permission.”
“I know.”
Mara stepped away from him.
Dante watched, silent.
Rachel continued.
“In those forty-eight hours, you copied something from Thomas’s computer.”
“What?”
“We don’t know.”
“Who’s we?”
“Everyone.”
Adrian said, “That’s why they’ve been hunting her.”
Mara looked at him.
“You knew.”
“I suspected.”
“You built the Prague archive around my biometrics because you thought I had information.”
“Yes.”
Dante moved closer.
“Mara.”
She raised one hand.
Not now.
Rachel said, “The archive records your actions during those missing hours.”
“How?”
“Northstar internal cameras.”
Mara’s voice dropped.
“So Prague contains my missing memory.”
“Part of it.”
“And you want it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Rachel finally lost some of her composure.
“Because Thomas wasn’t acting alone.”
Mara stared.
“Who?”
Rachel did not answer.
Dante said, “Five minutes are over.”
Rachel looked at him.
“You should want the answer too.”
“Then give it.”
She looked at Mara again.
“The second leak came from the Cavalari family.”
“Victor,” Dante said.
“No.”
Dante became still.
“Who?”
Rachel stood.
“Prague will tell you.”
Mara laughed without humor.
“You came here to stop us opening Prague and now you’re encouraging it.”
“I came to control how you open it.”
“Meaning?”
“Together.”
“No.”
“Mara.”
“No.”
Rachel sighed.
“Then at least hear my proposal.”
She described a neutral-location exchange.
Not Prague.
A charity dinner hosted the next night by one of Wexler’s nonprofit partners.
Dante almost laughed.
“You want us to attend another gala.”
“Private dinner.”
“Difference?”
“Fewer chandeliers.”
Mara looked at Rachel.
“What are you offering?”
“A copy of the missing forty-eight-hour medical file.”
“And you want?”
“The encryption seed.”
Adrian touched the capsule beneath his shirt.
“No.”
Rachel looked at Mara.
“You should ask why he’s afraid to give it up.”
Mara already knew.
Because once she opened Prague, there would be no more controlled truth.
Everything would become visible.
Rachel left.
Dante closed the door behind her.
“We are not attending.”
Mara said, “We are.”
“No.”
“She has my medical record.”
“She claims she does.”
“Exactly.”
“You think it’s a trap.”
“Yes.”
“So do I.”
Dante stared.
“And you still want to go.”
“Yes.”
“You’re exhausting.”
“You followed me into a basement after twelve minutes.”
“You keep using that.”
“Because it remains useful.”
Adrian interrupted.
“Rachel’s dinner is at the Wexler Museum annex.”
Dante frowned.
“You know it?”
“I investigated it.”
“What’s beneath it?”
“Private storage.”
Mara understood.
“Another archive.”
Adrian nodded.
“Wexler family papers.”
Dante looked at Mara.
“Still think she wants a simple exchange?”
“No.”
“What does she want?”
“To get all the remaining pieces in one room.”
Adrian.
Mara.
Dante.
The encryption seed.
Possibly Finn.
They decided to attend.
Not as Rachel expected.
Dante arrived publicly.
Mara entered through a staff entrance.
Adrian stayed offsite.
Finn monitored cameras.
Rachel’s dinner had twelve guests.
Executives.
A judge.
Two developers.
A former prosecutor.
People from the old Meridian network.
Dante sat at the table.
Rachel raised a glass.
“To transparency.”
Dante smiled.
“Bold toast.”
She smiled back.
“Bold evening.”
Meanwhile Mara moved through the basement.
She found Wexler storage.
Locked.
Her borrowed credential opened it.
Inside were boxes of financial history.
She searched.
Then saw a name.
CAVALARI, ALESSANDRO.
Mara opened the file.
Letters.
Twenty-eight years old.
Between Alessandro and Charles Wexler.
At first cooperative.
Then tense.
One letter stopped her.
Charles,
I will not authorize surveillance on families to secure compliance.
Meridian was designed to move resources toward clinics, not collect private leverage.
If this continues, the Cavalari Foundation withdraws.
—A.
Mara stared.
Proof.
Alessandro had tried to stop Meridian far earlier than Victor claimed.
Another letter.
Alessandro,
You mistake your permission for necessity.
We no longer require either.
—Charles.
Mara photographed both.
Then she found the medical folder.
ELENA MARKOVIC.
She opened it.
Emergency admission.
Concussion.
Sedation.
Discharge.
One handwritten note:
Patient repeated phrase after regaining consciousness:
“Blue ledger. Cavalari. Not Alessandro.”
Mara froze.
Cavalari.
Not Alessandro.
A second Cavalari had been connected to Thomas before Victor entered the picture.
She read the next page.
Visitor authorized:
L. CAVALARI.
Mara’s breath stopped.
Luca?
No.
Eight years ago Luca had been twenty-six.
Possible.
But the handwriting was older.
She photographed it.
Then footsteps.
Rachel entered.
“You always find the file faster than expected.”
Mara stood.
“Who was L. Cavalari?”
Rachel smiled sadly.
“You don’t remember.”
“No.”
“You knew him.”
“Who?”
“Lorenzo Cavalari.”
Dante’s grandfather.
Mara stared.
“He was dead.”
“Officially.”
The phrase had become poisonous.
Rachel continued.
“Lorenzo lived six years longer than the family announced.”
“Why?”
“Dementia. Alessandro protected his privacy.”
“What did he have to do with Northstar?”
“Nothing.”
“Then why visit me?”
“Because you called him.”
Mara shook her head.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Rachel looked toward the old letters.
“Because Lorenzo created the blue ledger.”
“What is it?”
“The original record of everyone who transformed Meridian from a charity consortium into an influence network.”
Mara’s pulse quickened.
“And I found it.”
Rachel nodded.
“Eight years ago.”
“Where?”
“You never told anyone.”
“Then how do you know?”
“Because after you woke, you asked for Lorenzo.”
Mara stared.
“What happened to the ledger?”
Rachel’s expression hardened.
“That is why everyone has been looking for you.”
Mara understood.
The Halcyon drive was not the true evidence.
The Prague archive was not the true evidence.
She was.
Somewhere inside the forty-eight hours missing from her memory was the location of the blue ledger.
Before she could speak, alarms triggered upstairs.
Finn’s voice came through.
“Mara, leave now.”
“What happened?”
“Dante’s been locked inside the dining room.”
Rachel’s face changed.
“That wasn’t me.”
Mara stared.
“Who?”
Finn answered over the earpiece.
May you like
“Luca Cavalari just arrived.”
And upstairs, Dante watched his cousin enter the room and understood that Luca’s confession at the church had never been the whole truth.
