Chapter 7 - What the Cameras Failed to Record

Dante took Adrian to the Cavalari house before asking anything else.
Mara hated that.
“You trust him?”
“No.”
“He’s my brother.”
“Exactly.”
“That makes no sense.”
“It makes perfect sense.”
Adrian sat across from them in Dante’s study.
Finn placed the Union Station documents on the desk.
Dante remained standing.
“Start with Victor.”
Adrian leaned back.
“Your uncle discovered Alessandro’s investigation before Northstar completed it.”
“How?”
“A source inside Wexler.”
“Who?”
“Claire Pierce’s father.”
Mara frowned.
“Evelyn’s husband?”
“Martin Pierce.”
Dante knew the name vaguely.
A corporate attorney who had died years earlier.
“Martin worked for Wexler?”
“Outside counsel.”
Adrian nodded.
“He discovered transactions routing money through subcontractors. He told Evelyn. Evelyn told Alessandro.”
“Then why does Claire believe my father killed Evelyn?”
“She doesn’t.”
Dante stared.
“Thomas said—”
“Thomas knows what Claire wanted him to know.”
Mara’s expression hardened.
“Meaning?”
“Claire isn’t chasing revenge.”
“What is she chasing?”
Adrian looked at Dante.
“Ownership.”
“Of what?”
“The network.”
Silence.
Mara leaned forward.
“Claire is Meridian?”
“One part of it.”
“How big?”
“Smaller than it was. More dangerous than it was.”
Finn asked, “Victor?”
“Another part.”
Dante frowned.
“They work together?”
“Sometimes.”
“Sometimes?”
“The Circle was never loyal. Everyone cooperated until their interests diverged.”
“So why steal the drive now?”
Adrian looked at the Union Station letter.
“Because Alessandro’s evidence identifies the people who built the original system.”
“Most of them would be old.”
“Some became powerful.”
Dante understood.
“Politicians.”
“Executives. Judges. Developers.”
“Names?”
“The drive has them.”
“And Victor wants them for blackmail.”
“Leverage.”
The word Mara had used earlier.
Adrian continued.
“If Victor controls the old Meridian files, he can force powerful people to support contracts, zoning decisions, financing and political appointments.”
Dante’s eyes narrowed.
“And the foundation?”
“Your foundation owns development rights in six neighborhoods scheduled for major public investment.”
Dante knew.
Clinics.
Housing partnerships.
Community centers.
Properties Alessandro had acquired cheaply years earlier.
“Victor doesn’t care about pediatric clinics.”
“No.”
“He cares about land.”
“Yes.”
Mara asked, “What does Claire get?”
“Wexler.”
“Graham?”
“Graham Wexler is a figurehead. Claire has controlled their special projects division for three years.”
Finn frowned.
“She uses her mother’s name?”
“No. Claire Rowan.”
Mara remembered the woman in burgundy.
Different surname.
Different history.
“Why appear personally tonight?”
Adrian looked at her.
“Because she wanted you to recognize the patterns.”
“Why?”
“To see whether you still had Northstar instincts.”
Mara went cold.
“She tested me.”
“Yes.”
“For what?”
“You’re the only person who can open the second archive.”
Silence.
Dante looked at her.
“What second archive?”
“I don’t know.”
Adrian smiled sadly.
“Yes, you do.”
“No.”
“You just don’t remember it as an archive.”
Mara stared.
Adrian reached into his coat.
Finn moved instantly.
Adrian slowly produced a photograph.
An apartment building in Prague.
Mara recognized it.
Her old home.
“No.”
“In the basement,” Adrian said.
“There was nothing there.”
“There was.”
“I lived there for four years.”
“And you never asked why Northstar paid your rent?”
“Company housing.”
“Exactly.”
Mara stood.
“Adrian.”
“The building contained a secure dead-storage room accessible only through biometric confirmation from two designated employees.”
“Who?”
“You and Daniel.”
Daniel Ross.
Northstar’s director.
One of the five Mara thought had died.
“Daniel’s alive?”
Adrian looked at her.
“I don’t know.”
She laughed bitterly.
“You all need a better answer.”
Dante said, “If Mara is required to open it, Claire needs her alive.”
“Yes.”
“Victor knows that?”
“Yes.”
“So tonight wasn’t an assassination attempt.”
“No.”
“It was recruitment.”
Mara looked at Adrian.
“The message told me I should have stayed dead.”
“To frighten you.”
“Into doing what?”
“Following.”
Dante understood.
“Every step tonight was designed to move her.”
“Exactly.”
“To the archive.”
“Eventually.”
Mara’s anger sharpened.
“Then why are you here?”
Adrian’s face changed.
“Because the original plan was mine.”
Silence.
Mara stared.
“What?”
“I arranged the guest-list messages.”
Dante stepped toward him.
“You put my father’s name on the list.”
“Yes.”
“You put your own name there.”
“Yes.”
“You contacted Thomas?”
“Yes.”
Mara looked betrayed.
“You brought me into this?”
“I needed you moving before Claire did.”
“You could have called.”
“No. You would have disappeared.”
“That was my right.”
“And then Claire would’ve found you alone.”
Mara turned away.
Adrian stood.
“I’m sorry.”
“No, you aren’t.”
“Yes.”
“No. You’re sorry I’m angry. That’s different.”
Dante watched the siblings.
He recognized something familiar.
Family members using protection to justify deception.
The Cavalari specialty.
Finn opened another document.
“These are security-camera timestamps from the Halcyon.”
Adrian looked.
Finn continued.
“We have twelve minutes missing from the basement feed.”
“Expected.”
“But something else is wrong.”
He placed two still frames side by side.
Mara leaned closer.
“What?”
“Timestamp jumps twelve minutes, but the ballroom clocks move sixteen.”
Dante frowned.
“Meaning?”
“Someone altered the video before tonight.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“How long before?”
Finn checked.
“Metadata says five days.”
Mara understood.
“They pre-recorded a clean feed.”
“Yes.”
“From inside the Halcyon.”
Dante stared.
“Who had access?”
Finn looked uncomfortable.
“Foundation technical team. Hotel security. Event contractors.”
“And family security?”
“Yes.”
Dante’s expression darkened.
“Names.”
Finn opened a list.
Thirty-two people.
One made Dante freeze.
LUCA CAVALARI.
His cousin.
Victor’s son.
Mara noticed.
“Who?”
Dante turned the laptop toward her.
“My cousin.”
“Close?”
“He grew up in my house.”
Adrian sat back.
“Victor never works directly.”
Dante ignored him.
He called Luca.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Finn tried.
Voicemail.
“Where does he live?”
“Lakeview.”
Dante grabbed his coat.
Mara blocked him.
“You’re going to walk into another trap.”
“He’s family.”
“That hasn’t worked out especially well tonight.”
Dante stared at her.
“He may be in danger.”
“Then send security.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because if he helped Victor, I want to see his face when I ask.”
Mara recognized the logic.
Not rational.
Human.
That made it more dangerous.
They drove to Luca’s apartment.
Door unlocked.
Lights on.
Television playing.
No Luca.
Finn searched.
Mara walked into the kitchen.
Two coffee cups.
One still warm.
“He wasn’t alone.”
Dante entered the bedroom.
A suitcase lay open.
Empty hangers.
Passport gone.
On the desk sat an envelope.
DANTE.
Dante opened it.
Inside was a flash drive and a handwritten note.
I’m sorry. I thought he only wanted the files.
Dante’s jaw tightened.
Mara read over his shoulder.
I didn’t know anyone would get hurt. I didn’t know what Meridian really was.
Finn whispered, “Luca gave them camera access.”
Dante inserted the flash drive into an offline laptop.
One video file.
They played it.
Security footage from the Halcyon loading dock.
Five days earlier.
Luca entered.
Then Victor Cavalari.
Then the woman in burgundy.
Claire Pierce.
The three spoke for eleven minutes.
No audio.
But at the end, Victor handed Claire something.
A brass key.
The same key missing from Dante’s book.
Mara looked at Dante.
“Victor opened the Union Station box.”
“Then why leave the documents?”
“Because he wanted you to find them.”
Dante stared.
“Why?”
Adrian answered.
“To make you distrust everyone.”
Dante turned.
“Including Finn.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Finn is the only person who knows where Evelyn Pierce is.”
Finn went still.
Mara stared at him.
“You said you didn’t know.”
“I said I hadn’t spoken to her in six years.”
“That’s not the same thing.”
Finn closed his eyes.
Dante’s voice became dangerously quiet.
“Where is she?”
Finn looked at his oldest friend.
“Dante—”
“Where?”
Finn swallowed.
“She’s in Chicago.”
The room went silent.
“Since when?”
“Three months.”
“Why?”
“Because she came back to warn me.”
“About Claire?”
“No.”
Finn looked at the video.
“About Victor.”
Dante stepped closer.
“And you said nothing.”
“She made me promise.”
“My father made you promise. Pierce made you promise. Everyone seems to get promises except me.”
Finn flinched.
Then he said, “Because every person who told you the truth became someone Victor could track through you.”
Dante stared.
Finn took out his phone.
“I’ll take you to her.”
Mara looked at Adrian.
“Is this what you wanted?”
“No.”
“What did you want?”
“To get to Evelyn before Claire.”
Mara’s eyes narrowed.
“Why?”
Adrian’s expression changed.
Because he had not told them everything.
Dante saw it too.
“What does Evelyn know?”
Adrian did not answer.
Mara stepped toward her brother.
“Adrian.”
He looked at her.
“She knows who created Meridian.”
“Victor?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Adrian looked at Dante.
“Alessandro Cavalari.”
Dante’s face emptied.
Mara whispered, “Your father?”
May you like
Adrian nodded.
And the truth that followed would force Dante to choose between defending the memory of the man who raised him and exposing the empire that man had secretly built.
