Chapter 5 - Mara Vale Wasn’t Her First Name

Thomas Bell looked nothing like a dead man.

That unsettled Mara more than scars would have.

He sat in a small interview room inside a Cavalari-owned office building, wearing the same gray tuxedo from the gala, minus the jacket.

No restraints.

Dante had insisted.

“If he wants to run,” Dante told Finn outside, “let him try.”

Thomas watched Mara enter.

For seven years, she had pictured him beneath rubble.

Now he looked older.

Grayer.

Alive.

“Hello, Elena.”

Mara stopped across the table.

“Don’t call me that.”

“You always hated your middle name.”

“My middle name is Sofia.”

Thomas smiled sadly.

“Exactly.”

A test.

Something only someone from Northstar would know.

Dante remained beside the wall.

Finn stood at the door.

Mara sat.

“You stole the drive.”

Thomas shook his head.

“No.”

“You entered the archive.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To stop the people who did.”

“Who?”

Thomas looked at Dante.

“Before I answer, ask Mr. Cavalari whether this room is secure.”

Dante’s expression remained flat.

“It is.”

“Against your own people?”

Finn’s eyes narrowed.

“Careful.”

Thomas looked back at Mara.

“You still trust too quickly.”

She almost laughed.

“I spent seven years using a fake name.”

“And somehow you ended up standing beside the son of the man who started all of this.”

Dante stepped forward.

“My father started what?”

Thomas considered him.

“You really don’t know.”

“Know what?”

“Why Alessandro hired Northstar.”

“Financial theft.”

“That came later.”

Mara frowned.

“Thomas.”

He looked at her.

“The original contract wasn’t about money.”

“That’s not possible. I reviewed the intake.”

“You reviewed what they gave you.”

“Who’s they?”

Thomas leaned back.

“Adrian.”

Mara felt the air leave the room.

“My brother didn’t work for Northstar.”

“No. But he brought the case.”

She stared.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“He was working for Wexler.”

“As cover.”

“Why?”

“Because Adrian was investigating a procurement network connected to children’s hospitals.”

Dante’s voice hardened.

“What network?”

“The same one Alessandro discovered.”

Thomas looked at Mara.

“Your brother contacted him first.”

Mara remembered Adrian’s strange questions.

Charitable foundations.

Construction contracts.

Hidden payments.

“You’re lying.”

“I wish I were.”

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

“Because Northstar was compromised.”

“By whom?”

“That was the problem. We didn’t know.”

Thomas leaned forward.

“Adrian believed someone inside Northstar was selling investigative information.”

Finn asked, “To Wexler?”

“Not Wexler. Wexler was a middleman.”

“For whom?”

Thomas looked at Dante.

“The Meridian Circle.”

Silence.

Dante frowned.

“Never heard of it.”

“That’s intentional.”

Thomas continued.

“It wasn’t an organization with offices or membership cards. It was an arrangement. Investors. Contractors. Lobbyists. A few government officials. People who shared information to control city projects.”

“Criminal conspiracy?”

Thomas gave a tired smile.

“Sometimes the difference between conspiracy and networking is the quality of the restaurant.”

Dante did not smile.

“My father found out.”

“Yes.”

“And he hired Northstar.”

“Yes.”

“Then Northstar’s Prague office burned.”

“Yes.”

“Five people died.”

Thomas looked at Mara.

“Nobody from our team died.”

She stared.

“What?”

“The office was empty.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“I was there.”

“You arrived after the evacuation.”

“I saw—”

“You saw fire.”

“I saw Daniel’s coat.”

“Planted.”

“Thomas—”

“You saw evidence designed to convince you we were gone.”

Mara stood.

Her chair scraped backward.

“No.”

Dante moved slightly but did not touch her.

Thomas remained seated.

“Elena—”

“Don’t.”

“Mara.”

She looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because the compromised person had access to operational files. We couldn’t know who they were.”

“So you faked your deaths?”

“To disappear.”

“And left me?”

“We thought you were compromised.”

Mara went completely still.

“You thought I betrayed you.”

Thomas looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

Seven years.

Seven years of nightmares.

Seven years of guilt.

Seven years believing five people died because she missed something.

Because she had failed to identify a leak.

Because she had survived.

“They left me,” she whispered.

Dante heard.

Thomas heard.

Nobody answered.

“Who decided?” Mara asked.

Thomas looked down.

“Adrian.”

That hurt worse.

“My brother decided I was the leak?”

“He had evidence.”

“What evidence?”

“Your credentials accessed a Northstar server the night before the evacuation.”

“I didn’t.”

“I know.”

“Now?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Because the access occurred while you were with me in Warsaw.”

Mara stared.

“You knew that then.”

“I did.”

“So why didn’t you tell Adrian?”

“I tried.”

“What happened?”

Thomas’s eyes hardened.

“I never reached him.”

Dante asked, “Where was Adrian?”

“Chicago.”

Mara whispered, “With Alessandro.”

“Yes.”

Thomas took a slow breath.

“The plan was to expose the Meridian Circle. Alessandro had collected financial records. Adrian had sources. Northstar had surveillance.”

“What went wrong?” Dante asked.

“Alessandro changed his mind.”

Dante’s expression changed.

“My father didn’t scare easily.”

“He wasn’t scared for himself.”

“Then who?”

Thomas looked toward Mara.

“Her.”

Mara blinked.

“Me?”

“Adrian told Alessandro someone framed you as the leak. Alessandro believed that meant the Circle had identified your family.”

Dante stepped closer.

“So he sealed everything.”

“He moved the evidence to the Halcyon archive.”

“And then?”

“Three weeks later, Alessandro Cavalari died.”

Dante’s voice went cold.

“Heart attack.”

“That’s what the report said.”

Finn shifted.

Dante stared at Thomas.

“If you’re suggesting—”

“I’m suggesting nothing. I’m telling you what happened next. Alessandro died. Adrian disappeared. The Circle went quiet. Northstar scattered.”

“And Mara?”

Thomas looked at her.

“We lost her.”

“You didn’t lose me,” she said. “You abandoned me.”

Thomas accepted it.

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

Mara turned away.

Dante wanted to say something.

He did not know what.

That frustrated him.

Thomas reached into his shirt pocket.

Finn instantly moved.

“Slow.”

Thomas withdrew a folded photograph.

He placed it on the table.

Mara turned back.

The image showed three men outside a Chicago restaurant.

Alessandro Cavalari.

Adrian Markovic.

And Graham Wexler.

Date stamp: eight years earlier.

Dante picked it up.

“Where did you get this?”

“Adrian sent it to me two weeks ago.”

Mara stared.

“You’ve been in contact with him?”

“No.”

“Then how?”

“An encrypted dead drop we established years ago activated.”

Mara’s voice trembled despite her effort.

“He’s alive?”

“I don’t know.”

“But he sent this?”

“Someone with his authentication key did.”

Dante looked at the photograph.

“Message?”

Thomas nodded.

“He wrote one sentence.”

“What?”

Thomas looked at Mara.

“The wrong man died.”

Nobody spoke.

Dante’s expression hardened.

“My father?”

“I don’t know.”

Mara asked the question she had been afraid to ask.

“When was Adrian last definitely seen alive?”

Thomas hesitated.

“Seven years ago.”

“Where?”

“Chicago.”

“Doing what?”

“Meeting Evelyn Pierce.”

The name from Dante’s photograph.

The supposedly dead surgeon.

Mara closed her eyes.

Thomas continued.

“Adrian believed Pierce knew who framed you.”

“Why?”

“Because she had access to the clinic contracts.”

Dante said, “And tonight?”

Thomas looked at him.

“Tonight someone stole the only surviving master file.”

Mara frowned.

“You said you didn’t steal it.”

“I didn’t.”

“Then who did?”

Thomas’s gaze went to the mirror on the wall.

Dante understood the gesture.

Someone watching.

Finn checked the adjoining room.

Empty.

Thomas said, “The woman in burgundy.”

“We know.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You don’t.”

“Who is she?”

Thomas looked directly at Mara.

“Her name is Claire Pierce.”

Dante went still.

“Pierce?”

“Evelyn’s daughter.”

Mara stared.

“Why would Evelyn Pierce’s daughter steal Alessandro’s file?”

Thomas’s answer landed harder than any accusation.

“Because she believes Dante’s father murdered hers.”

For a moment nobody moved.

Then Thomas added the fact that made everything worse.

“Claire Pierce isn’t working alone.”

Dante’s eyes narrowed.

“With whom?”

Thomas looked at Finn.

Finn noticed.

And for the first time that night, Finn Mercer appeared genuinely afraid.

May you like

Thomas spoke quietly.

“With someone inside the Cavalari family.”
