Chapter 10 - The Millionaire Stood Up

“Uncle?”

Christopher's voice sounded almost childlike.

Raymond took another slow step.

“You look disappointed.”

Christopher tightened his hold on Theodore.

“Stay back.”

I saw police lights reflected faintly in the distant windows, but the officers were waiting for the signal.

Raymond's strength was limited.

We all knew it.

Christopher didn't.

That was our advantage.

“You heard everything?” Christopher asked.

Raymond nodded.

“For months.”

Christopher’s face collapsed.

Every conversation.

Every calculation.

Every question about how long Raymond had left.

He suddenly understood what that meant.

“You can't prove anything.”

Raymond looked at me.

“Nora can.”

Christopher laughed.

“A broke caregiver?”

His mistake was saying it aloud.

Because his contempt made him careless.

He began talking.

About Wallace.

About Raymond’s company.

About how Raymond had never trusted him with real power.

Each sentence became evidence transmitted to officers outside.

I kept my eyes on Theodore.

“Give me my baby.”

Christopher looked down.

For one second, his attention shifted.

Raymond said one word.

“Now.”

Police entered from three directions.

Christopher tried to run.

He didn't make it five feet.

I grabbed Theodore.

He screamed when I pulled him against my chest.

It was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard.

Christopher was handcuffed on the marble floor.

Raymond remained standing until Theodore was safe.

Then his knees buckled.

I caught him.

As paramedics rushed forward, he looked at Theodore.

“Worth it,” he whispered.

Christopher Winslow was taken away.

This time, he didn't walk back out.

But our story wasn't finished.

Because the evidence recovered from the mansion revealed that Christopher hadn't acted only for inheritance.

Raymond’s company contained another secret.

And exposing it could destroy everything Raymond had spent his life building.
