Chapter 6 - The Doctor Who Vanished

Dr. Wallace left behind almost nothing.
No forwarding address.
No scheduled appointments.
No explanation.
His office computer had been wiped.
But people who disappear in a hurry make mistakes.
Wallace made one.
He forgot about the pharmacy invoices.
Evelyn found them through Raymond’s corporate insurance records.
Several medications billed under Raymond’s name had never appeared in his official medical chart.
Dr. Chen compared the dates.
“They correspond with his worst declines.”
The police opened a formal investigation.
Christopher hired attorneys.
Expensive ones.
Then he went on television.
He described himself as a grieving nephew whose family had been invaded by “an unstable caregiver attempting to exploit a vulnerable patient.”
He never said my name.
He didn't need to.
By evening, reporters were outside the hospital.
I sat beside Raymond with Theodore asleep in a stroller.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
Raymond’s speech was slowly returning.
“For… what?”
“For making this public.”
His mouth lifted faintly.
“You… saved me.”
Those three words broke something inside me.
For months, I had measured my worth by overdue bills, rejected applications, and the number in my bank account.
But Raymond didn't see a broke woman.
He saw the person who had believed him.
Over the next several days, his strength improved.
He could move two fingers.
Then his wrist.
Then his left foot.
Each tiny victory felt enormous.
One afternoon, he managed a complete sentence.
“Christopher thinks Wallace is gone.”
I leaned closer.
“What do you mean?”
Raymond looked toward Evelyn.
“He isn't.”
“How do you know?”
Raymond swallowed.
“Wallace has a cabin.”
Evelyn immediately called investigators.
The cabin was found three hours away.
Wallace wasn't there.
But his leather medical bag was.
Inside were vials.
Records.
And a handwritten payment ledger.
One set of initials appeared repeatedly beside large transfers.
C.W.
Christopher Winslow.
But investigators discovered something else.
A final entry.
A date.
The next day.
Beside it were two words:
FINAL DOSE.
Christopher hadn't abandoned the plan.
He was still trying to finish it.

And somehow—
he still had someone inside the hospital.
