Chapter 12 - Christopher’s Last Weapon

The secret wasn't criminal.
It was personal.
Twenty-seven years earlier, Raymond had fathered a daughter.
He had been nineteen.
The relationship ended.
The mother disappeared from his life.
Raymond had spent years searching for the child.
Christopher had discovered the records and planned to use them publicly.
Raymond told me before the newspapers could.
“I never met her.”
“Did you try?”
“Every year.”
His voice cracked.
“I don't even know if she knows I exist.”
Two days later, the story leaked anyway.
Reporters surrounded the hospital.
Headlines painted Raymond as a billionaire who had abandoned a child.
He could have hidden.
Instead, he faced the cameras.
“I have made mistakes,” he said. “But abandoning my daughter was not one of them. If she is watching, I want her to know I searched for her, and I never stopped.”
The story changed overnight.
Not because everyone believed him.
Because someone did.
A woman named Claire Morgan contacted Evelyn.
DNA testing confirmed it.
Claire was Raymond’s daughter.
She was twenty-seven.
When she entered his hospital room, Raymond couldn't speak.
For a man who had faced attempted murder without crying, seeing Claire destroyed him.
“I thought you didn't want me,” she said.
Raymond shook his head.
“Never.”
They talked for six hours.
I took Theodore for a walk and gave them privacy.
When I returned, Claire was sitting beside Raymond.
She smiled at me.
“You're Nora.”
I nodded.
“My father says you saved his life.”
I looked at Raymond.
“Your father exaggerates.”
Raymond smiled.
“No.”
Claire looked between us.
Then smiled in a way that made me suddenly interested in adjusting Theodore’s blanket.
Later that evening, Raymond asked me to stay.
Not as his caregiver.
“As what?”
He hesitated.
“My friend.”
I smiled.
“I can do that.”
But friendship was becoming a dangerous word.

Because somewhere between terror, recovery, and Theodore’s laughter—
I had begun falling in love with the man I had once believed had five days left to live.
