Chapter 14 - The Life I Chose

I accepted.

Not immediately.

I made Mercer wait three days.

Mostly because he deserved it.

The new program trained military and civilian personnel in emergency extraction, medical decision-making, communication, and crisis leadership.

I insisted on one additional module.

Listening.

Mercer laughed when he saw it.

“You’re serious?”

“Dead serious.”

“What exactly are we teaching?”

“That people in distress often tell you what’s wrong before systems believe them.”

He stopped laughing.

“Keep it.”

Claire helped develop the medical portion.

We used anonymized scenarios.

One involved an injured person whose symptoms were dismissed as anxiety.

Nobody needed to know where I got the idea.

My family continued changing.

Mom became almost irritatingly good at apologizing.

Dad learned to ask, “Do you want help?” instead of automatically deciding what kind of help someone needed.

Jessica and Nathan settled into marriage without trying to make it look perfect.

They fought about dishes.

Money.

Nathan leaving socks everywhere.

Normal things.

Then Jessica became pregnant.

She told me first.

“Why me?”

“Because if I tell Mom first, there will be a nursery spreadsheet by dinner.”

Fair.

Nine months later, my niece Elizabeth was born.

Jessica named her middle name Rebecca.

I pretended to hate it.

I absolutely did not.

Holding that baby changed something in me.

Family had once felt like obligation.

Now it felt like possibility.

Not guaranteed.

Built.

Chosen repeatedly.

And that became important when I received one final piece of Granddad’s past.

A package arrived from the federal evidence archive.

His journals had been cleared for return.

Inside one journal was a photograph I had never seen.

Granddad as a young man.

Beside him stood Dad, perhaps eight years old.

On the back:

Teach your children they never have to earn their place at your table.

I drove straight to Dad’s house.

He read it.

Then sat down.

“He wrote that?”

“Yes.”

Dad cried.

May you like

I sat beside him.

For once, neither of us tried to hide it.
