Chapter 16 - Claire’s Call

At 2:14 one morning, my phone rang.

Claire.

I answered instantly.

“What happened?”

Her voice shook.

“I need help.”

I sat up.

Claire never sounded afraid.

“What is it?”

“My younger brother.”

His name was Evan.

I knew little about him.

“He’s missing.”

“What do you mean?”

“He texted me from a highway rest stop three hours ago. His car was found there. He’s not answering.”

I was already dressing.

“Call police.”

“I did.”

“Good.”

“I know this isn’t your job.”

“Claire.”

Silence.

“You believed me when nobody else did.”

Her breath caught.

“I’m coming.”

This was not a classified mission.

No federal convoy.

No special authority.

Just a friend needing another friend.

Police eventually located Evan after his car broke down and he accepted a ride from another motorist before his phone battery died. A communications mix-up made the situation look far worse than it was.

At dawn, Claire hugged him in a gas-station parking lot.

Then she hugged me.

“I overreacted.”

“No.”

“I did.”

“You were scared.”

She looked at me.

“And you listened.”

“Someone taught me.”

She laughed through tears.

That morning clarified something.

I had spent years believing repayment meant matching the scale of a favor.

Claire saved my life.

I thought I owed her something equally dramatic.

But friendship doesn’t keep score that way.

Sometimes repayment is answering the phone.

May you like

Sometimes it is driving two hours at 2 a.m.

Sometimes it is simply believing someone when they say they need you.
