Chapter 18 - The Wedding Photograph

Three years after Jessica’s wedding finally happened, she gave me a framed photograph.
Not of her ceremony.
Not of her and Nathan.
It showed the hospital corridor.
I stared at it.
“Where did you get this?”
“Claire.”
The image came from a hospital staff recognition display.
Claire was pushing my wheelchair.
I looked exhausted.
Behind us, Jessica was visible in her ruined first wedding dress, held back by an officer.
Mom stood farther away.
It was ugly.
Chaotic.
Painful.
“Why would you give me this?”
Jessica sat beside me.
“Because I used to hate this picture.”
I looked at her.
“I thought it showed the day you destroyed my wedding.”
My chest tightened.
“And now?”
She touched the frame.
“Now I think it shows the day our family finally stopped pretending.”
I looked again.
Claire pushing forward.
Me surviving.
Jessica behind me.
Mom behind her.
Everyone caught at the exact moment our old family structure was breaking.
Jessica smiled sadly.
“I’m glad you’re in front.”
“Why?”
“Because for once, we were all forced to follow you instead of making you carry us.”
I hugged her.
The photograph went on the wall at the cabin.
May you like
Not because it was beautiful.
Because it was true.
